We developed a calorimeter for determining absolute terahertz (THz) power. The calorimeter is based on a DC substitution method using an isothermal temperature-control technique. A neutral-density optical filter glass was used as a volume absorber, and its THz absorption was evaluated by a time-domain spectrometer. Highly sensitive measurement of the absolute THz power was experimentally achieved in the range from the submicrowatt to microwatt level at room temperature. Power measurement of a continuous-wave THz source using a photomixer was demonstrated. This calorimeter is expected to demonstrate the traceability of THz power at a submicrowatt level.

A ridge-loaded staggered double-vane slow-wave structure is proposed for terahertz radiation sources employing a sheet electron beam. This slow-wave structure has the advantages of enhanced electric field and energy density distribution and improved interaction impedance in the beam-wave interaction region. High-frequency characteristics are investigated for the proposed slow wave structure and compared with those of the staggered double-vane slow wave structure.

Synchrotron sourced Fourier transform infrared (SS FTIR) microspectroscopy was employed to investigate the biological effects on the neuron-like pheochromocytoma (PC 12) cells after exposure to synchrotron sourced terahertz (SS THz) radiation. Over 10 min of exposure, the PC 12 cells received a total energy of 600 J m, with a total incident power density of ∼1.0 W m (0.

Terahertz (THz) polarization detection facilitates the capture of multidimensional data, including intensity, phase, and polarization state, with broad applicability in high-resolution imaging, communication, and remote sensing. However, conventional semiconductor materials are limited by energy band limitations, rendering them unsuitable for THz detection. Overcoming this challenge, the realization of high-stability, room-temperature polarization-sensitive THz photodetectors (PDs) leveraging the thermoelectric effect of Cs(FAMA)Pb(IBr) (CsFAMA)/metasurfaces is presented.

Optical logic gates based on nonlinear optical property of material with ultrafast response speed and excellent computational processing power can break the performance bottleneck of electronic transistors. As one of the layered 2D materials, TaNiS exhibits high anisotropic mobility, exotic electrical response, and intriguing optical properties. Due to the low-symmetrical crystal structures, it possesses in-plane anisotropic physical properties.

Bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) can break the Shockley-Queisser limit by leveraging the inherent asymmetry of crystal lattice without a junction. However, this effect is mainly confined to UV-vis spectrum due to the wide-bandgap nature of traditional ferroelectric materials, thereby limiting the exploration of the infrared light-driven efficient BPVE. Herein, giant two-photon absorption (TPA) driven BPVE is uncovered from visible to infrared in ferroelectric α-InSe utilizing wavelength-tunable terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy.
