Article Abstract

We numerically and experimentally demonstrate an iterative method to simultaneously reconstruct two unknown interfering wavefronts. A three-dimensional interference pattern is analyzed and then Zernike polynomials and the stochastic parallel gradient descent algorithm are used to expand and calculate wavefronts.

The traditional interferometric calibration of phase spatial light modulators (SLM) based on interference fringes shift is easily disturbed due to environmental vibration. Here a kind of absolutely interferometric calibration of phase SLM is investigated to eliminate the disturbance using dual honeycomb gratings composited with Billet-split Fresnel zone plates (BsFZP), in which honeycomb gratings split an incident beam into three beams and the first two beams are interfered by BsFZP while the last beam is chosen as the absolute reference point. The experiments on both 532 and 632.

We examine cross-spectral purity of random, nonstationary (pulsed), scalar light fields with arbitrary spectral bandwidth. In particular, we derive a reduction formula in terms of time-integrated coherence functions, which ensures cross-spectral purity of interfering fields having identical normalized spectra. We further introduce fields that are cross-spectrally pure in either a global or local sense.

Automated alignment can significantly increase optical system precision and flexibility, and reduce time and labor costs in system setup and maintenance. We present an automated alignment technique on a double off-axis parabolic mirror system, which poses challenging alignment problems due to the mirrors' high sensitivity to aberrations, rotational asymmetry, and non-orthogonality in stage adjustments. In our methodology, we use focal plane wavefront sensing to eliminate the non-common path error, increase optical throughput, and reduce cost and system complexity.

Lateral shear interferometer, being a self-referenced interferometer, has proven to be an important tool in scalar optics. Here we employ a vectorial counterpart - polarization lateral shear interferometer, in which the two interfering beams apart from being derived from the test wavefront, are in orthogonal states of polarization. Therefore when the test wavefront has spatially varying phase gradient across the beam cross-section, the resulting shearogram produces polarization fringes instead of intensity fringes.

The intrinsic fluorescence of samples confounds the use of fluorescence-based sensors. This is of particular concern in high-throughput screening (HTS) applications using large chemical libraries containing intrinsically fluorescent compounds. To overcome this problem, we developed a bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) Ca sensor, CalfluxCTN.
