Deposit of Red Blood Cells at low concentrations in evaporating droplets is dominated by a central edge growth.

J Colloid Interface Sci

Department of Experimental Physics & Center for Biophysics, Saarland University, Saarbruecken, D-66123, Germany. Electronic address:

Evaporation of blood droplets and diluted blood samples is a topic of intensive research, as it is considered a potential low-cost diagnostic tool. So far, samples with a volume fraction down to a few percent of red blood cells have been studied, and these were reportedly dominated by a "coffee-ring" deposit. In this study, samples with lower volume fractions were used to investigate the growth of the evaporative deposit from sessile droplets in more detail.

Article Synopsis
  • Vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) is a new surgical method that combines vaginal access with laparoscopic tools, resulting in less postoperative pain and shorter hospital stays due to no abdominal incisions.
  • Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is a technique to safeguard the reproductive health of young women at risk of premature ovarian insufficiency from cancer treatments, involving the removal and freezing of ovarian tissue for future transplant after cancer remission.
  • This study details the use of vNOTES for performing ovarian biopsies for cryopreservation, although the technique has not yet been applied for this purpose in clinical practice.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the effectiveness of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for treating ovarian pseudomyxoma peritonei (OPMP), a rare condition without established treatment protocols.
  • The research involved 15 patients, revealing that 60% achieved complete cytoreduction, and tumors were classified into different groups based on their histological characteristics, with varying outcomes in disease-free survival.
  • The findings suggested that complete CRS/HIPEC may offer favorable long-term results for OPMP patients, especially for those with particular tumor origins linked to teratomas.

Objectives: Mitral annular calcification remains a formidable lesion in cardiac surgery with significant perioperative morbidity and mortality, particularly when en bloc annular decalcification is implemented. Respect strategies and hybrid approaches have provided safe alternatives. We report the short-term results of our institution's experience with mitral valve replacement in patients with extensive annular calcification.

Objective: To assess if Alexis dual-ring wound protector/retractor reduced the incidence of superficial and deep incisional infection following open radical cystectomy (ORC).

Methods: Since January 2020, all procedures were performed using the Alexis retractor. We retrospectively reviewed our ORC database and compared patients who were operated on with Alexis with the same number of consecutive patients operated with a stainless steel retractor in the previous period.
