Rollover cyclometalation involves bidentate heterocyclic donors, unusually acting as cyclometalated ligands. The resulting products, possessing a free donor atom, react differently from the classical cyclometalated complexes. Taking advantage of a "rollover"/"retro-rollover" reaction sequence, a succession of oxidative addition and reductive elimination in a series of platinum(II) complexes [Pt(N,C)(Me)(PR3)] resulted in a rare C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) bond formation to give the bidentate nitrogen ligands 3-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine, 3,6-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine, and 3-methyl-2-(2'-pyridyl)-quinoline, which were isolated and characterized. The nature of the phosphane PR3 is essential to the outcome of the reaction. This route constitutes a new method for the activation and functionalization of C-H bond in the C(3) position of bidentate heterocyclic compounds, a position usually difficult to functionalize.

We developed a Pd-catalyzed intermolecular reductive Heck reaction to construct Csp2-Csp3 bonds between aryl bromides and olefins. Various styrene derivatives, acyclic and cyclic alkenes, were well tolerated to couple with varied aryl bromides in linear selectivity. Kinetic and deuterium labeling experiments suggested that i-PrOH provides a hydride through β-H elimination.

A regioselective direct alkylation of coumarins at C-3 via cross-dehydrogenative coupling of unactivated Csp2-Csp3 bonds is developed. This protocol employs tert-butyl hydroperoxide as the sole reagent of the reaction to combine coumarins and ethers in reasonable yields under metal- and solvent-free reaction conditions. This protocol also worked well with coumarin-3-carboxylic acids to unveil a rare instance of a catalyst-free tandem alkylation/decarboxylation reaction with conservation of the double bond.

A Catellani reaction terminated by palladacycle amination leading to methanocarbazoles is reported. The outcome is the formation of three different Csp(3)-Csp(2)/Csp(3)-N/Csp(2)-N bonds through a Heck reaction/C-H activation/double amination cascade in one process.

A Pd-catalyzed efficient reductive cross-coupling reaction without metallic reductant to construct a Csp(2) -Csp(3) bond has been reported. A Pd(IV) complex was proposed to be a key intermediate, which subsequently went through double oxidative addition and double reductive elimination to produce the cross-coupling products by involving Pd(0/II/IV) in one transformation. The oxidative addition from Pd(II) to Pd(IV) was partially demonstrated to be a radical process by self-oxidation of substrate without additional oxidants.

We report herein a general catalytic method for Csp(2)-Csp(3) bond formation through C-F activation. The process uses an inexpensive nickel complex with either diorganozinc or alkylzinc halide reagents, including those with β-hydrogen atoms. A variety of fluorine substitution patterns and functional groups can be readily incorporated.
