Background: There is an increasing interest in the role of inflammatory mechanisms contributing to the development of stroke. Recent studies have reported an association between allele 2 of a variable number tandem repeat of the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN) gene in Caucasian patients with ischemic stroke. The purpose of this investigation is to independently confirm these results in our study population.

Methods: We recruited and genotyped 516 Caucasian patients with ischemic stroke and 380 matched controls. Tests of association were performed to estimate odds ratio (OR) for the IL1RN gene variable number tandem repeat polymorphism with case-control status. Genotype frequencies of IL1RN gene were compared by case-control and symptom status using χ2 contingency tables and logistic regression models.

Results: No significant association was observed between any of the IL1RN gene genotypes and ischemic stroke. The unadjusted association model a, and the fully saturated model e, adjusted for age, gender, and stroke risk factors demonstrated no significant increase in risk associated with the IL1RN gene 2/2 genotype (a: OR, 1.11; 95% confidence interval [CI], .67-1.89; P=.615; and e: OR, .95; 95% CI, .46-1.94; P=.574). Analyses of genotypic and allelic frequencies of each Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment subtype with control and pairwise comparison between stroke subtypes did not show any significant differences in their distributions, and all P values were greater than the significance level of .05.

Conclusion: Our results do not confirm an association between the gene and ischemic stroke in Caucasian patients.

Prognostic impact of one-year permanent pacemaker implantation after mitral valve surgery with the Cox-maze procedure.

Eur J Cardiothorac Surg

January 2025

Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Korea University Anam Hospital, Korea University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic impact of permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation within the first year after mitral valve (MV) surgery combined with the Cox-maze procedure, focusing on long-term outcomes, including overall mortality, infective endocarditis (IE), and ischaemic stroke.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) in South Korea, identifying 10,127 patients who underwent MV surgery with the Cox-maze procedure between 2005 and 2020. Patients were classified into the PPM and non-PPM groups based on PPM implantation within one year postoperatively.

Regulatory T Cells for Stroke Recovery: A Promising Immune Therapeutic Strategy.

CNS Neurosci Ther

January 2025

Department of Research, Beijing Rehabilitation Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Background: Stroke remains a leading cause of mortality and disability among adults. Given the restricted therapeutic window for intravascular interventions and neuroprotection during the acute phase, there has been a growing focus on tissue repair and functional recovery in the subacute and chronic phases after stroke. The pro-inflammatory microglial polarization occurs in subacute and chronic phases after stroke and may represent therapeutic targets for stroke recovery.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a rare systemic vasculitis that is characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulcers, uveitis, and skin lesions. Although neurological involvement is a known complication, ischemic stroke remains uncommon. Herein, we report a 37-year-old Kuwaiti woman who experienced recurrent ischemic stroke with no traditional risk factors.

White Matter Injury in Central Nervous System Disorders.

Neuropsychiatr Dis Treat

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, The Affiliated Taian City Central Hospital of Qingdao University, Taian, 271000, People's Republic of China.

As the aging process accelerates and living conditions improve, central nervous system (CNS) diseases have become a major public health problem. Diseases of the CNS cause not only gray matter damage, which is primarily characterized by the loss of neurons, but also white matter damage. However, most previous studies have focused on grey matter injury (GMI), with fewer studies on white matter injury (WMI).
