Published: March 2014

Limnothrix (strain AC0243) is a cyanobacterium, which has only recently been identified as toxin producing. Under laboratory conditions, Bufo marinus larvae were exposed to 100,000 cells mL(-1) of Limnothrix (strain AC0243) live cultures for seven days. Histological examinations were conducted post mortem and revealed damage to the notochord, eyes, brain, liver, kidney, pancreas, gastrointestinal tract, and heart. The histopathological results highlight the toxicological impact of this strain, particularly during developmental stages. Toxicological similarities to β-N-Methylamino-L-alanine are discussed.

Community Structure and Toxicity Potential of Cyanobacteria during Summer and Winter in a Temperate-Zone Lake Susceptible to Phytoplankton Blooms.

Cyanobacterial blooms are increasingly common during winters, especially when they are mild. The goal of this study was to determine the summer and winter phytoplankton community structure, cyanotoxin presence, and toxigenicity in a eutrophic lake susceptible to cyanobacterial blooms throughout the year, using classical microscopy, an analysis of toxic cyanometabolites, and an analysis of genes involved in biosynthesis of cyanotoxins. We also assessed whether cyanobacterial diversity in the studied lake has changed compared to what was reported in previous reports conducted several years ago.

Prokaryotic Argonaute (pAgo) proteins are guide-dependent nucleases that function in host defense against invaders. Recently, it was shown that TtAgo from Thermus thermophilus also participates in the completion of DNA replication by decatenating chromosomal DNA. Here, we show that two pAgos from cyanobacteria Synechococcus elongatus (SeAgo) and Limnothrix rosea (LrAgo) are active in heterologous Escherichia coli and aid cell division in the presence of the gyrase inhibitor ciprofloxacin, depending on the host double-strand break repair machinery.

Driving forces for the growth of MIB-producing Planktothricoides raciborskii in a low-latitude reservoir.

In comparison with the middle- and high-latitude regions, the low-latitude regions are less associated with the occurrence of 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) episodes, since most of the previously identified MIB producers favor moderate/low light/temperature conditions. Here, we report a serious MIB outbreak over the period from Jul. 2018 to Jun.

Various studies have been conducted to understand the impact of environmental pollutants on cyanobacteria due to their abundant presence in aquatic and terrestrial environments, specific morphological and physiological characteristics, and high ecological flexibility in response to environmental changes. Here, the effect of different concentrations of cadmium on two native strains of cyanobacteria, namely Synechococcus sp. HS01 and Limnothrix sp.

Cyanobacteria are a diverse group of photosynthetic Gram-negative bacteria that produce an array of secondary compounds with selective bioactivity against a broad spectrum of organisms and cell lines. In this study, 29 strains isolated from freshwaters in Greece were classified using a polyphasic approach and assigned to Chroococcales, Synechococcales, and Nostocales, representing 11 genera and 17 taxa. There were good agreements between 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA)--internal genetic spacer (IGS) characterization and morphological features, except for the - group which appears intermixed and needs further elucidation.
