The complete nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial genome of the Asian particolored bat, Vespertilio sinensis, was determined. The genome organization, gene contents, and codon usage conformed to those of other bat mitochondrial genomes. The total length of the mitogenome of Vespertilio sinensis is 16,971 bp with a total base composition of 32.6% A, 29.6% T, 23.7% C and 14.0% G. The mitogenome consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA (12S and 16S RNA) genes, 22 tRNA genes and 1 control region.

Orofacial morphology in mammals plays a critical role in essential life functions such as feeding and communication, which are influenced by the shapes of these anatomical structures. Bats are known to exhibit highly diversified orofacial morphotypes within their clade, reflecting their varied diets and echolocation behaviors. The presence of bony discontinuities between the premaxilla and maxilla or among the premaxillae is a notable feature of bat orofacial morphology, observed in certain lineages.

Throughout East Asia, Europe, and North America, mammalian orthoreovirus (MRV), for which bats have been proposed to be natural reservoirs, has been detected in a variety of domestic and wild mammals, as well as in humans. Here, we isolated a novel MRV strain (designated as Kj22-33) from a fecal sample from Vespertilio sinensis bats in Japan. Strain Kj22-33 has a 10-segmented genome with a total length of 23,580 base pairs.
