Published: March 2013

The aim of this study was to investigate the protein expression of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs, including DNMT1, DNMT2, DNMT3A, DNMT3B and DNMT3L) and methyl-CpG-binding domain protein 2 (MBD2) in gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Immunohistochemistry and western blot analysis were used to detect expression of DNMT and MBD2 in 15 pairs of adult GIST and matched non-tumor tissues. The protein expression of DNMT1, DNMT2, DNMT3B, DNMT3L and MBD2 was significantly higher in adult GISTs compared to the matched non-tumor tissues (P<0.05). However, no significant difference was detected in the protein expression of DNMT3A between tumor and non-tumor tissues (P>0.05). Associations between DNMT1 expression and mitotic index, DNMT3B expression and tumor size, as well as DNMT3L expression and infection were detected in GISTs (P<0.05). In conclusion, GISTs exhibit a high protein expression of DNMT (with the exception of DNMT3A) and MBD2.

Glucose is the most abundant monosaccharide and a principal substrate in biotechnological production processes. In Pseudomonas, this sugar is either imported directly into the cytosol or first oxidised to gluconate in the periplasm. While gluconate is taken up via a proton-driven symporter, the import of glucose is mediated by an ABC-type transporter, and hence both require energy.

Rac/Rop proteins, a kind of unique small GTPases in plants, play crucial roles in plant growth and development and in response to abiotic and biotic stresses. However, it is poorly understood whether cotton Rac/Rop protein genes are involved in mediating cotton resistance to Verticillium dahliae. Here, we focused on the function and mechanism of cotton Rac/Rop gene GhRac9 in the defense response to Verticillium dahliae infection.

Photosynthetic microalgae are promising green cell factories for the sustainable production of high-value chemicals and biopharmaceuticals. The chloroplast organelle is being developed as a chassis for synthetic biology as it contains its own genome (the plastome) and some interesting advantages, such as high recombinant protein titers and a diverse and dynamic metabolism. However, chloroplast engineering is currently hampered by the lack of standardized cloning tools and Design-Build-Test-Learn workflows to ease genomic and metabolic engineering.

Histone Modifications and DNA Methylation in Psoriasis: A Cellular Perspective.

Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

In recent years, epigenetic modifications have attracted significant attention due to their unique regulatory mechanisms and profound biological implications. Acting as a bridge between environmental stimuli and changes in gene activity, they reshape gene expression patterns, providing organisms with regulatory mechanisms to respond to environmental changes. A growing body of evidence indicates that epigenetic regulation plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis and progression of psoriasis.

Inflammatory bone resorption represents a pathological condition marked by an increase in bone loss, commonly associated with chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis. Current therapies primarily focus on anti-inflammatory drugs and bisphosphonates; however, these treatments are limited due to side effects, inadequate efficacy, and unpredictable long-term complications. Kurarinone (KR), a bioactive compound isolated from the traditional Chinese herb Sophora flavescens, exhibits a range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and cardiovascular protective effects.
