Nanoparticles formed in gas phase environments, such as combustion, have an important impact on society both as engineering components and hazardous pollutants. A new software package, the Stochastic Nanoparticle Simulator (SNAPS) was developed, applying a stochastic chemical kinetics methodology, to computationally investigate the growth of nanoparticle precursors through trajectories of chemical reactions. SNAPS was applied to characterize the growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), important precursors of carbonaceous nanoparticles and soot, in a premixed laminar benzene flame, using a concurrently developed PAH growth chemical reaction mechanism, as well as an existing benzene oxidation mechanism. Simulations of PAH ensembles successfully predicted existing experimentally measured data and provided novel insight into chemical composition and reaction pathways. The most commonly observed PAH isomers in simulations showed the importance of 5-membered rings, which contrasts with traditionally assumed compositions involving primarily pericondensed 6-membered rings. In addition, the chemical growth of PAHs involved complex sequences of highly reversible reactions, rather than relatively direct routes of additions and ring closures. Furthermore, the most common reactions involved 5-membered rings, suggesting their importance to PAH growth. The framework developed in this work will facilitate future investigation of particle inception and soot formation and will benefit engineering of novel combustion technologies to mitigate harmful emissions.

In this study, a large drinking water reservoir (Fengshuba Reservoir) was chosen as a representative case, and the bacterial communities in the sediments and soils of Water-level fluctuating zone (WLFZ) as well as their responses to heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the abundance and diversity of the bacterial community obviously changed with seasonal hydrological variations in sediments, and the absolute abundance and composition of bacteria community differed significantly between the sediment phase and soil phase. Bacteria with the ability to degrade pollutants rapidly proliferate and gain ascendancy in the soil phase, with Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia (B-C-P) and Bradyrhizobium forming the core of the largest community.

Determination and validation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH4) in katsuobushi, plant-based food supplements, and cocoa bean shells using GC-MS/MS.

Division of Research and Analysis, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, No.161-2, Kunyang St, Nangang District, Taipei City 11561, Taiwan, R.O.C.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are primarily generated through the incomplete combustion or pyrolysis of organic materials in various industrial processes. Foods may become contaminated with environmental PAHs found in air, soil, or water, or through industrial food processing methods such as smoking, roasting, drying, and grilling. The Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan has established maximum levels for benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and indicative values for BaP as well as PAH4 (the sum of benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene) in foods as operational guidelines.

Cotton undergarments as a tool for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons whole body dosimetry of firefighters.

Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine of the German Social Accident Insurance, Institute of the Ruhr University Bochum (IPA), Bochum, Germany.

Firefighters are exposed to a variety of hazardous substances during firefighting activities. Fire smoke contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) some of which have been shown to cause cancer in humans. To assess dermal exposure of firefighters during real-life firefighting, a whole-body dosimetry method was applied to determine the PAH that settles on the skin despite firefighters wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

A new type of sorbent functionalized with π-hole bond, perfluoronaphthyl bonded magnetic nanosorbent (FeO@SiO-CF), was designed and synthesized. The morphology, structure and magnetic properties of the sorbent were characterized. The results of a comparative experiment with naphthyl bonded magnetic nanosorbent (FeO@SiO-CH) revealed that the π-hole bonds between perfluoronaphthyl and PAHs improved adsorbilities for PAHs in water compared to the traditional π-π interactions between naphthyl and PAHs.

Lebanon, plagued by political and economic crises, experienced a government collapse in early 2020, leading to an electrical nationwide blackout by 2023. Diesel generators were used to compensate for the absence of power production from the national provider, Electricité du Liban (EDL). To investigate the effect of the crisis on the levels of 16 EPA particle bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPAHs), an annual comparative analysis of three locations within Beirut started in 2022 and ended in 2023.
