Published: November 2014

Soil and radioactive slurries were analyzed for the presence of beta emitting (241)Pu and (90)Sr. The comparison study between two different LSC apparatus, TriCarb 2200/2550 and Hidex 300 SL, shows good agreement for the quench corrected (241)Pu activity concentrations. The (90)Sr activity concentrations of most soil samples were in agreement, and were confirmed by the recommended IAEA-375 value. The Hidex 300 SL is an excellent apparatus to measure pure β-emitters of routine samples.

The triple-to-double coincidence ratio (TDCR) method is a liquid scintillation primary method for the absolute activity measurement of pure β- and pure electron capture emitters. This method requires specific three-photomultiplier liquid scintillation counters. The aim of the present work is to assess the TDCR method performance for routine tritium analysis in urine using an HIDEX 300 SL, the only three-photomultiplier liquid scintillation counter designed for routine laboratories.

Bilateral comparison between PTB and ENEA to check the performance of a commercial TDCR system for activity measurements.

Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Bundesallee 100, D-38116 Braunschweig, Germany.

The only commercial TDCR counter from Hidex Oy (Finland), comprising three photomultiplier tubes, was tested at the two National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) PTB and ENEA. To this end, the two NMIs purchased a Hidex 300 SL TDCR counter (METRO version) each and carried out various tests at their laboratories. In addition, the two institutions agreed to organize a bilateral comparison in order to acquire information on the reproducibility of the results obtained with the counters.

Investigations on TDCR measurements with the HIDEX 300 SL using a free parameter model.

Appl Radiat Isot

September 2012

Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Bundesallee 100, 38116 Braunschweig, Germany.

The Triple to Double Coincidence Ratio (TDCR) method requires a special counting system with three photodetectors. The systems currently used by National Metrology Institutes for activity standardizations are custom built, and up to now the HIDEX 300 SL counter is the only TDCR counter commercially available. At PTB, measurements with a special metrology version of this counter were carried out to investigate its applicability for activity standardizations.
