In this study, the oligomerization pattern of apo- and holoforms of the Orange Carotenoid Protein (OCP) was examined under different conditions such as photoactivation state, concentration, and carotenoid embedment using analytical ultracentrifugation. Furthermore, studies were conducted on OCP constructs carrying point mutations of amino acid residues affecting OCP oligomerization. Our findings reveal that the concentration-dependent dimerization of dark-adapted OCP holoprotein from Synechocystis sp.

FirstStep2Health: A cluster randomised trial to promote healthy behaviours and prevent obesity amongst low-income preschoolers.

Pediatr Obes

July 2024

Division of Biostatistics & Epidemiology, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Department of Pediatrics, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

Objective: To evaluate the preliminary effects of a theory-based, multi-component intervention on improving healthy lifestyle behaviours and preventing obesity amongst low-income preschoolers.

Methods: A cluster randomised controlled trial was conducted at 10 daycare centres. The 16-week FirstStep2Health intervention, grounded in the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model and the Social Cognitive Theory, included five components: a Facebook-based parent programme, three virtual parent meetings, three weekly motivational text messages, parent-child learning via weekly child letters and daycare centre-based child programme.

Article Synopsis
  • Seeds are crucial for the survival and reproduction of higher plants, going through stages like embryogenesis, maturation, and germination before becoming seedlings.
  • The final maturation phase is characterized by dehydration, dormancy induction, and a balance between hormones like Abscisic acid (ABA) and Gibberellins (GA), which regulate dormancy and prevent premature sprouting.
  • During germination, the breakdown of stored mRNAs and proteins triggered by reactive oxygen species (ROS) shifts the hormone balance towards GA, leading to processes that mobilize food reserves and promote seedling establishment, influenced by additional hormones like auxin and ethylene.

Background: High-resolution metabolomics (HRM) is an innovative tool to study challenging infectious diseases like leprosy, where the pathogen cannot be grown with standard methods. Here, we use HRM to better understand associations between disease manifestations, nutrition, and host metabolism.

Methods: From 2018 to 2019, adults with leprosy and controls were recruited in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

In plants, the switch to autotrophic growth involves germination followed by postgermination seedling establishment. When environmental conditions are not favorable, the stress hormone abscisic acid (ABA) signals plants to postpone seedling establishment by inducing the expression of the transcription factor ABI5. The levels of ABI5 determine the efficiency of the ABA-mediated postgermination developmental growth arrest.
