High Cs-137 concentrations in plants growing on peatland inspired us to investigate the quantity of its bioavailable fraction in natural peat. Our investigation aims to: a) estimate the quantity of bioavailable Cs-137 and Pu present in peat, b) verify the similarity of Cs-137 and K-40 behaviours, and c) perform a quantification of Cs-137 and Pu transfer from peat to plants. We analysed the vertical distribution of Cs-137 and Pu isotopes in the peat and their concentrations in plants growing on these places. Bioavailability of radionuclides was investigated by sequential extraction. Sequential analyses revealed that it was the upper layer which contained the majority of Cs-137 in an available form while deeper layers retained Cs-137 in immobile fractions. We can conclude that 18% of all Cs-137 in the peat is still bioavailable. Despite of the low quantity of bioavailable fraction of Cs-137 its transfer factor reached extremely high values. In the case of Pu, 64% of its total amount was associated with fulvic/humic acids which resulted in the high transfer factor from peat to plants. 27 years after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, the significant part of radionuclides deposited in peatland is still bioavailable.

Radioactive Ce in ionic (I-Ce), nano (N-Ce, 11 ± 9 nm mean primary particle size ± standard deviation) and micron-sized (M-Ce, 530 ± 440 µm) forms associated with natural and artificial diets in natural river water and synthetic freshwater were used to measure the real-time biokinetics of dietary Ce assimilation in a freshwater food chain. The model food chain consisted of microalgae (Raphidocelis subcapitata), snails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) and prawns (Macrobrachium australiense). Pulse-chase experiments showed that 91-100 % of all forms of cerium associated with all diets and water types were eliminated from the digestive system of the snail and prawn within 24 h, with no detectable cerium assimilation.

Chicken yolk immunoglobulin (IgY) is a natural immunologically active antibody extracted from egg yolk and can be used as a natural dietary supplement for the treatment of inflammation and damage to the intestines. In our study, IgY was embedded in a double emulsion (W/O/W; DE) to explore the therapeutic effect of the embedded IgY on Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced jejunal injury in mice. The results showed that W/O/W-embedded IgY as a dietary supplement (IgY + DE) attenuated LPS-induced damage to mouse small intestinal structures and protected the integrity of the jejunal mucosal barrier.

Date processing industries generate substantial quantities of waste, including date seeds, which present disposal challenges and environmental concerns. Traditionally, date seed waste has been discarded through landfilling, open burning, or dumping, leading to soil, air, and water pollution. However, with increasing awareness of environmental sustainability and resource conservation, there is a growing interest in valorizing date seed waste using green extraction technologies and innovative food product development approaches for date seed valorization.

Latency is the major obstacle in eradicating HIV from infected patients. Recent studies have shown that BET protein inhibitors can successfully reverse this latency by inhibiting the binding of BET proteins with positive cellular cofactor P-TEFb. Thus, availability of P-TEFbs plays an important role in HIV transactivation.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) brings new hope for the treatment of breast cancer due to few side effects and highly effective cell killing; however, the low bioavailability of traditional photosensitizers (PSs) and their dependence on oxygen severely limits their application. Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) PSs can dramatically facilitate the photosensitization effect, which can have positive impacts on tumor PDT. To-date, most AIE PSs lack tumor targeting capability and possess poor cell delivery, resulting in their use in large quantities that are harmful to healthy tissues.
