Thermostable enzymes are required for application in a wide range of harsh industrial processes. High stability and activity at elevated temperatures, as well as high tolerances toward various reagents and solvents, are needed. In this work, a glycoside hydrolase family 1 β-glucosidase (Bgl1) of archaeal origin was isolated from a hydrothermal spring metagenome. The enzyme showed a broad substrate spectrum with activity toward cellobiose, cellotriose and lactose. Compared to most enzymes, extremely high specific activity with 3195U/mg was observed at 90°C and pH 6.5. Bgl1 was completely stable at pH 4.5-9.5 for 48 h at 4 °C. More than 40% of activity was measured at 105 °C. A thermal activation was observed at 90 °C after 30 min. Enzyme stability was enhanced (5- and 7-fold) after applying pressure of 100 and 200 bar at 90 °C for 2h, respectively. The affinity of the β-glucosidase to its substrate was significantly increased in the presence of AlCl₃. The K(i) value for glucose was 150 mM. These distinctive characteristics distinguish Bgl1 from other enzymes described so far and make this enzyme suitable for application in numerous processes that run at high temperatures.

In this study, the photodegradation of cetirizine dihydrochloride (CET) by BiO/TiO heterojunctions under simulated solar light irradiation (300-800nm) was examined in detail for the first time. A hydrothermal synthesis of the photocatalyst was carried out, and several analytical techniques were used to characterize the product. The resulting BiO/TiO photocatalyst effectively removed CET from an aqueous solution.

Background: Tramway Ridge, a geothermal Antarctic Specially Protected Area (elevation 3340 m) located near the summit of Mount Erebus, is home to a unique community composed of cosmopolitan surface-associated micro-organisms and abundant, poorly understood subsurface-associated microorganisms. Here, we use shotgun metagenomics to compare the functional capabilities of this community to those found elsewhere on Earth and to infer in situ diversity and metabolic capabilities of abundant subsurface taxa.
Results: We found that the functional potential in this community is most similar to that found in terrestrial hydrothermal environments (hot springs, sediments) and that the two dominant organisms in the subsurface carry high rates of in situ diversity which was taken as evidence of potential endemicity.

It is well known that biochar remarkably changes the fertility and quality in degraded soils, however, it's still not clear how homogeneous application (HA) and bottom concentrated application of biochar (CA) influences soil moisture (SM), soil temperature (ST) and salts during crops seedling stage. In this study, both HA and CA combining with four levels of 0 (CK), 10 (CA1/HA1), 20 (CA2/HA2) and 40 t ha (CA3/HA3) were used to reveal how biochar affects SM, ST and soil electrical conductivity (EC) at seedling stage (spring) of maize in moderately degraded Mollisols. The results showed that, the speed of daily ST increase was only significantly slower in CA1 than in CK during the warming stage, performing a "hysteresis effect".

Vittore", located in the Province of Ancona, Italy) on 8 patients suffering from rhinogenic deafness caused by chronic rhinosinusitis associated with nasal polyps and respiratory allergies. Patients underwent 12 sessions of sulfurous aerosol therapy and 12 bilateral tubal insufflations (1 aerosol and 1 insufflation per day).

The zoeal appendages are illustrated using confocal laser scanning microscopy and described. A comparison between first stage zoeal morphology of Gandalfus yunohana (Takeda, Hashimoto & Ohta, 2000) and A. rodriguezensis is made and, although remarkably similar, they can be distinguished by dorsal pleonal spinulation.
