The vibrational density of states of a series of homologous triphenylene-based discotic liquid crystals HATn (n = 5, 6, 8, 10, 12) depending on the length of the aliphatic side chain is investigated by means of inelastic neutron scattering. All studied materials have a plastic crystalline phase at low temperatures, followed by a hexagonally ordered liquid crystalline phase at higher temperatures and a quasi isotropic phase at the highest temperatures. The X-ray scattering pattern for the plastic crystalline phase of all materials shows a sharp Bragg reflection corresponding to the intercolumnar distance in the lower q-range and a peak at circa 17 nm(-1) related to intracolumnar distances between the cores perpendicular to the columns as well as a broad amorphous halo related to the disordered structure of the methylene groups in the side chains in the higher q-range. The intercolumnar distance increases linearly with increasing chain length for the hexagonal columnar ordered liquid crystalline phase. A similar behaviour is assumed for the plastic crystalline phase. Besides n = 8 all materials under study exhibit a Boson peak. With increasing chain length, the frequency of the Boson peak decreases and its intensity increases. This can be explained by a self-organized confinement model. The peaks for n = 10, 12 are much narrower than for n = 5, 6 which might imply the transformation from a rigid system to a softer one with increasing chain length. Moreover the results can also be discussed in the framework of a transition from an uncorrelated to a correlated disorder with increasing n where n = 8 might be speculatively considered as a transitional state.

0D hybrid metal halide (HMH) luminescent glasses have garnered significant attentions for its chemical diversity in optoelectronic applications and it also retains the skeleton connectivity and coordination mode of the crystalline counterparts while exhibiting various physics/chemistry characteristics distinct from the crystalline states. However, understanding of the glass-forming ability and the specific structural origins underpinning the luminescent properties of 0D HMH glasses remains elusive. In this review, it is started from the solid-liquid phase transition and thermodynamic analysis of 0D HMHs formed through melt-quenching, and summarize the current compounds capable of stably forming glassy phases via chemical structural design.

Hypothesis: It is hypothesised in this work that mesoscale clusters will be present in both undersaturated and supersaturated solutions of organic pharmaceutical molecules. These clusters, being loose aggregates, could be sensitive to shear forces experienced during filtration. Thus, comparing the behaviour of these clusters alongside nanoparticles during filtration-an important sample treatment parameter during crystallization-will elucidate qualitative differences from solid, crystalline nanoparticles of similar size.

Background: A strong association between multiple sclerosis (MS) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been established but the exact role of EBV in MS remains controversial. Recently, molecular mimicry between EBNA1 and specific GlialCAM, CRYAB and ANO2 peptides has been suggested as a possible pathophysiological mechanism. The aim of this study was to analyse anti-EBV antibodies in MS patients against (I) EBV lifecycle proteins, (II) putative cross-reactive peptides, and (III) during treatment.

We have examined the structural and electron transport properties of a swallow-tailed ,'-bis(1-heptyloctyl)-perylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide) () in thin films. A comprehensive analysis of material with the use of X-ray scattering methods evidenced the appearance of a new soft-crystalline mesophase that was induced by thermal processing of the swallow-tail PDI derivative. By combining electrical measurements with grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), we show that these morphological changes of thin films boost their charge transport in the organic field-effect transistor (OFET) configuration.

We report the pressure-temperature (-) phase diagram, the origin of the subglass dynamics, and the crystallization kinetics of the biobased polyester poly(ethylene 2,5-furanoate) (PEF), through dielectric spectroscopy (DS) measurements performed as a function of temperature and pressure. The phase diagram comprises four different "phases"; glass, quenched melt, crystalline, and normal melt. The cold crystallization temperature, , increases linearly with pressure (according to the Clausius-Clapeyron equation) as / ∼ 240 K·GPa and is accompanied by a small change in specific volume (Δ = 0.
