The synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of three five-coordinate nitrosyliron(II) complexes, [Fe(Porph)(NO)], are reported. These three nitrosyl derivatives, where Porph represents protoporphyrin IX dimethyl ester, mesoporphyrin IX dimethyl ester, or deuteroporphyrin IX dimethyl ester, display notable differences in their properties relative to the symmetrical synthetic porphyrins such as OEP and TPP. The N-O stretching frequencies are in the range of 1651-1660 cm(-1), frequencies that are lower than those of synthetic porphyrin derivatives. Mössbauer spectra obtained in both zero and applied magnetic field show that the quadrupole splitting values are slightly larger than those of known synthetic porphyrins. The electronic structures of these naturally occurring porphyrin derivatives are thus seen to be consistently different from those of the synthetic derivatives, the presumed consequence of the asymmetric peripheral substituent pattern. The molecular structure of [Fe(PPIX-DME)(NO)] has been determined by X-ray crystallography. Although disorder of the axial nitrosyl ligand limits the structural quality, this derivative appears to show the same subtle structural features as previously characterized five-coordinate nitrosyls.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) or eczema is an important inflammatory chronic skin disease that brings many complications in its management and treatment. Although several chemical agents are used for treatment, the search for better anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents of plant origin has been ongoing, since natural compounds, it is commonly believed, are less dangerous than synthetic ones. Therefore, the present study explored a medicinal plant- (L.

The Effect of Mono- and Di-Saccharides on the Microbiome of Dairy Cow Manure and Its Odor.

In a previous experiment, we showed that the odor of manure slurries could be improved by anaerobic incubation with the sugars glucose, lactose, and sucrose. This improvement was due to reductions in the concentrations of malodorants, including dimethyl disulfide, -cresol, -ethylphenol, indole, and skatole, and a shift to the production of fruity esters, including ethyl butyrate and propyl propanoate. Due to large concentrations of lactic acid produced by the sugar-amended manure slurries, we inferred that lactic acid bacteria were involved in improving the manure slurry odor.

Biogenesis of human telomerase requires its RNA subunit (hTR) to fold into a multi-domain architecture that includes the template-pseudoknot (t/PK) and the three-way junction (CR4/5). These hTR domains bind the telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) protein and are essential for telomerase activity. Here, we probe hTR structure in living cells using dimethyl sulfate mutational profiling with sequencing (DMS-MaPseq) and ensemble deconvolution analysis.

Rapid screening of pottery lipid residue profile via comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography.

Anal Chim Acta

Background: Pottery lipid residue analysis has been extensively practiced worldwide as an important part of archaeometry studies, but in some cases, the complexity of archaeological residue cannot be fully revealed by one-dimensional gas chromatography (1D GC) separation. Although the development of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) has offered another way to achieve better separation and higher resolution, GCxGC separation has rarely been applied to pottery residue analysis. Clearly, GCxGC separation needs to be explored to examine and scrutinize the complexity of pottery lipid residue profile as well as rapid data treatment workflow.

In this work, three bis-pyrrolidone-based structures (BP) were synthesized combining dimethyl itaconate (DMI), the dimethyl ester derivative of itaconic acid, with various aliphatic diamines having a C4 to C12 carbon chain length with the aim of developing novel bio-based building blocks. All three BPs were obtained with a purity >93% and could further be used without performing any tedious purification step, therefore allowing an easy scalability of the synthesis on a 10 g scale. Their potential application was demonstrated in two key areas of modern polymer science: (1) the enzymatic synthesis of polyesters and (2) their use as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) additives.
