During the last 9 years, 1,892 patients underwent surgery of the prostate. Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) accounted for 1,812 cases, and prostatic cancer 80 cases. In the case of BPH, transurethral resection was done in 1,645 cases, cryosurgery in 136 cases, and suprapubic prostatectomy in 31 cases. Latent cancer was detected in 54 (3.3%) of the BPH cases. The average patient age of the patients with latent cancer (73.6 +/- 6.9 years) was higher than that of those without latent cancer (69.5 +/- 7.7 years). This suggested a significant relationship between the age of the patient and the occurrence of latent cancer.

Gammaherpesviruses are DNA tumor viruses that establish lifelong latent infections in lymphocytes. For viruses such as Epstein-Barr virus and murine gammaherpesvirus 68, this is accomplished through a viral gene-expression program that promotes cellular proliferation and differentiation, especially of germinal center B cells. Intrinsic host mechanisms that control virus-driven cellular expansion are incompletely defined.

Most stillbirths and approximately two-thirds of preterm births, however, occur in the absence of evident risk factors. The majority of stillbirths occur in the preterm period, yet there are few interventions targeting this period, and progress to reduce stillbirth rates remains slow.

Designing binders to target undruggable proteins presents a formidable challenge in drug discovery. In this work, we provide an algorithmic framework to design short, target-binding linear peptides, requiring only the amino acid sequence of the target protein. To do this, we propose a process to generate naturalistic peptide candidates through Gaussian perturbation of the peptidic latent space of the ESM-2 protein language model and subsequently screen these novel sequences for target-selective interaction activity via a contrastive language-image pretraining (CLIP)-based contrastive learning architecture.

Objective: This study examined the heterogeneity of illness perceptions in patients with lung cancer and evaluated the mediating role of self-transcendence in the relation between illness perception and demoralization.
Methods: A convenience sample of 477 patients with lung cancer was selected from three tertiary hospitals in Wuhan, China, between January and June 2024. Participants completed the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, Self-Transcendence Scale, and Demoralization Scale.

Background: Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is a popular radiotherapy technique in the clinic. As consisting of hundreds of control points in a VMAT plan it is more complex and time consuming than those conventional treatment modalities, such as intensity modulated radiation therapy. To improve the efficiency and accuracy of its quality assurance procedure, a novel automated anomaly detection method was proposed.
