Oak-pollen extracts, separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and electrophoretically transferred onto nitrocellulose, demonstrated extensive banding in the absence of human sera or with nonatopic sera with both a horseradish peroxidase-conjugated goat antihuman IgE and 125I-labeled rabbit antihuman IgE. When the nonionic detergent Tween 20 was removed from all incubations and washes, negative banding appeared, corresponding to bands that were clearly visible when Tween 20 had been used as a blocking agent. When Tween 20 was reintroduced, the bands reappeared. These results demonstrate that, although Tween 20 is effective in blocking unbound sites on nitrocellulose membranes, this and other nonionic detergents may cause nonspecific binding to immunoblots of oak-pollen proteins. Thus, care must be used in the interpretation of immunoblots to detect allergens when Tween 20 is used as the blocking agent.

Understanding the mechanisms of allosteric regulation in response to second messengers is crucial for advancing basic and applied research. This study focuses on the differential allosteric regulation by the ubiquitous signaling molecule, cAMP, in the cAMP receptor protein from (CRP) and from (CRP). By introducing structurally homologous mutations from allosteric hotspots previously identified in CRP into CRP and examining their effects on protein solution structure, stability and function, we aimed to determine the factors contributing to their differential allosteric regulation.

Currently, the Russian Federation is considering the possibility of using insects as food raw materials, which, first of all, is positioned as a source of complete protein, therefore, the methodology of safety assessment of such products should include studying the proteomic profile of entomoprotein. Proteome profiling of the insect-derived novel food opens fresh opportunities not only for assessing their safety, but also for developing methods of elimination of potentially allergenic proteins from the final product. Modern technological approaches aimed at destruction or modification of the structure of such proteins, namely chemical modification (glycosylation, phosphorylation, acylation) and complexation with polyphenols, anthocyanins and other compounds, along with wet and dry thermal exposure, hydrolysis, fermentation, irradiation, ultrasound or high hydrostatic pressure treatment, will provide the possibility of obtaining products with reduced allergenic potential.

Three water-soluble Mn(III)-porphyrin complexes with cationic pyridyl side groups bearing COOH- or OH-terminated carbon chains in the meta or para positions have been synthesized as probes for both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and photodynamic therapy (PDT). The complexes , , and are highly water-soluble, and their relaxivities range between 10 and 15 mM s, at 20-80 MHz and 298 K, 2-3 times higher than that of commercial Gd(III)-based agents. The complexes containing carboxylate () or alcoholic () side chains in the para position are endowed with higher relaxivities and have also shown efficient photoinduced DNA cleavage and singlet oxygen (O) generation.

Monitoring cancer biomarkers is of great significance in clinical diagnosis. In this work, a label-free MWCNTs-COOH/CuNi-BTC/FTO electrochemical immunosensor was developed to quantitatively detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The bimetallic CuNi-BTC showed enhanced current than singe Ni-BTC, and the addition of the MWCNTs-COOH increased the conductivity and further amplified the current signal.

We present a model to describe the concentration-dependent growth of protein filaments. Our model contains two states, a low entropy/high affinity ordered state and a high entropy/low affinity disordered state. Consistent with experiments, our model shows a diffusion-limited linear growth regime at low concentration, followed by a concentration-independent plateau at intermediate concentrations, and rapid disordered precipitation at the highest concentrations.
