The spontaneous hepatomas of male mice (CBA X C57B1/6)F1 were studied using complex cytologic, histologic, immunochemical, and cytochemical methods. The AFP was detected in trace amount in the serum of tumour-bearing mice and in single cells of hepatomas. As a rule the hepatocarcinoma cells have the polymodal DNA distribution (2C-8C) with major peak of 4 C (in 18 out of 26 cases). More rarely the tumours with predominant diploid and octoploid cells were observed.

Studies in humans and rodents show exercise in pregnancy can modulate maternal blood pressure, vascular volume, and placental efficiency, but whether exercise affects early uteroplacental vascular adaptations is unknown. To investigate this, CBA/J female mice mated with BALB/c males to generate healthy uncomplicated pregnancies (BALB/c-mated) or mated with DBA/2J males to generate abortion-prone pregnancies (DBA/2J-mated), were subjected to treadmill exercise (5 days/week, 10 m/min, 30 min/day for 6 weeks before and throughout pregnancy), or remained sedentary. In uncomplicated pregnancies, exercise caused symmetric fetal growth restriction in fetuses evidenced by reductions in fetal weight, crown-to-rump length, abdominal girth and biparietal diameter.

Renal Epithelial Complement C3 Expression Affects Kidney Fibrosis Progression.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2024

Institute of Translational Medicine, Semmelweis University, Nagyvárad tér 4, 1089 Budapest, Hungary.

Kidney fibrosis is a hallmark of chronic kidney diseases. Evidence shows that genetic variability and complement component 3 (C3) might influence tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Still, the role of renal C3 production in the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and genetically determined fibrosis progression remains undiscovered.

Effect of thymidine kinase-deficiency (∆ORF38) on neuropathogenicity of equine herpesvirus-1 in the mouse model and expression of neighboring genes.

Virus Genes

December 2024

Laboratory of Veterinary Microbiology, Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences, Gifu University, 1-1 Yanagido, Gifu, 501-1193, Japan.

Previous studies showed that deletion of the viral thymidine kinase (TK) gene in several alphaherpesviruses including EHV-1 reduced their virulence. Previously, we found that deletion of ORF37, which is located head-to-head with TK, decreased EHV-1 virulence in mice but did not affect the expression of TK mRNA. Therefore, deletion of ORF38 might also affect virulence by partially deleting the ORF37 promoter.

Since therapeutic options are limited the utilization of prebiotics is suggested to prevent food allergies (FAs). Using an experimental peach allergy model we explored the effect of dietary fiber pectin, a high-methoxyl heteropolysaccharide, on the manifestation of FA. CBA/J mice were sensitized, subsequently orally boosted and provoked with peach peel extract.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) constitutes a significant global health issue for which there is no effective treatment. The loss of cochlear hair cells and associated synaptopathy are common causes of hearing impairment. One primary mechanism implicated in NIHL is the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which ultimately overwhelms cochlear cells.
