Background: Surgical site infections adversely affect patients' well-being. In this study, hand-washing details and adherence to surgical site antisepsis applications among surgical staff were observed and recorded. Then, a questionnaire was given to test surgeons' theoretical knowledge on operating room principles.

Methods: Staffs from 5 surgical units were selected (surgeons and nurses from general surgery, urology, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, and gynecology and obstetrics) and observed. They were questioned on the choice and properties of antiseptics, proper duration of hand washing and use of brushes, and essentials of patient skin antisepsis.

Results: A total of 107 observations (53 residents, 27 nurses, 6 attending staff, and 21 academic staff) were done. Overall mean (± standard deviation) hand-washing time was 69.1 (49.8) seconds (range: 43.8-98; p: 0.001). Overall, 79 (73.8%) never used a brush, 18 (16.8%) used the brush for the nails only, and 10 (9.4) used the brush for hands and arms as well as the nails. Mean (± standard deviation) time from the application of skin antiseptic to surgical incision time was 6.7 (3.5) minutes (p: 0.088). According to the questionnaire, surgeons believed that proper hand-washing time should be 4.2 ± 2.8 minutes (p = 0.13). Brush usage was questioned and 50 (70.4%) favored brush usage whereas 21 (29.6%) were against it. The question for mechanism of action of povidone iodine is answered as 'bactericidal' by only 69%.

Conclusion: The study shows that both adherence to local hand-hygiene protocols and surgical staffs' basic knowledge about surgical antisepsis are low.

Cryo-SIMPLY: A Reliable STT-MRAM-Based Smart Material Implication Architecture for In-Memory Computing.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Computer Engineering, Modeling, Electronics, and Systems Engineering, University of Calabria, 87036 Rende, Italy.

This paper presents Cryo-SIMPLY, a reliable smart material implication (SIMPLY) operating at cryogenic conditions (77 K). The assessment considers SIMPLY schemes based on spin-transfer torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM) technology with single-barrier magnetic tunnel junction (SMTJ) and double-barrier magnetic tunnel junction (DMTJ). Our study relies on a temperature-aware macrospin-based Verilog-A compact model for MTJ devices and a 65 nm commercial process design kit (PDK) calibrated down to 77 K under silicon measurements.

Borohydrides, known for ultrahigh hydrogen density, are promising hydrogen storage materials but typically require high operating temperatures due to their strong thermodynamic stability. Here we introduce a novel light-induced destabilization mechanism for hydrogen storage reaction of borohydrides under ambient conditions photogenerated vacancies in LiH. These vacancies thermodynamically destabilize B-H bonds through the spontaneous "strong adsorption" of BH groups, which trigger an asymmetric redistribution of electrons, enabling hydrogen release at near room temperature, approximately 300 °C lower than the corresponding thermal process.

Prognostic Value of Serum Bilirubin in Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Patients.

Curr Neurovasc Res

January 2025

Department of Critical Care Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.

Background: Bilirubin plays a crucial role in the pathophysiological processes of strokes. However, the relationship between serum bilirubin levels and the prognosis of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) remains unexplored. This study aims to investigate the association between serum bilirubin levels and the mortality rate of aSAH patients.

Asynchronous bilateral hematomas are exceedingly rare and pose increased risk and challenge during surgical treatment. In this case report, a 31-year-old male patient was initially found to have only a large left-sided epidural hematoma which was subsequently evacuated. An immediate postoperative CT scan demonstrated a new right-sided epidural hematoma.
