Information from the environment can be based on a single or several modalities. The simultaneous processing of information separated in space and/or time depends on multiple factors. Visual illusions serve as a good tool with which to investigate the parallel processing of information and their interactions. This study was designed to gain information about a unimodal illusion: a target that flashes once seems to flash more as a result of a simultaneously presented inducer flashing several times nearby. The first aim of this work was to understand whether the number of perceived flashes is merely a result of a bias in the criterion level or whether it is based on a real percept. We then clarified how the illusion finds its way into the percept. The final step was designed to establish the logic of the processing in the background by determining whether the modality appropriateness hypothesis, the information reliability hypothesis, or the discontinuity theory best explains the predominant role of the inducer.

The current study asked whether impoverished peripheral vision led to perception immune from word-based semantic influences. We leveraged a peripheral sound-induced flash illusion. In each trial, two or three Mandarin characters were flashed quickly in the periphery with number-congruent or -incongruent beeps.

Moving frames produce large displacements in the perceived location of flashed and continuously moving probes. In a series of experiments, we test the contributions of the probe's displacement and the frame's displacement on the strength of the frame's effect. In the first experiment, we find a dramatic position shift of flashed probes whereas the effect on a continuously moving probe is only one-third as strong.

Many famous scientists have reported anecdotes where a new understanding occurred to them suddenly, in an unexpected flash. Do people generally experience such "Eureka" moments when learning science concepts? And if so, do these episodes truly vehicle sudden insights, or is this impression illusory? To address these questions, we developed a paradigm where participants were taught the mathematical concept of geodesic, which generalizes the common notion of straight line to straight trajectories drawn on curved surfaces. After studying lessons introducing this concept on the sphere, participants (N = 56) were tested on their understanding of geodesics on the sphere and on other surfaces.
