Removal of spontaneously fractured leads with their proximal ends migrated into the vascular space has not been analysed in detail thus far. The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of different approaches and auxiliary tools for removing fractured leads with migrated proximal ends. Retrospective analysis of 72 cases from a database containing 3847 TLEs (transvenous lead extraction).

Birds use their claws to perch on branches, which helps them to recover energy and observe their surroundings; however, most biomimetic flapping-wing aircraft can only fly, not perch. This study was conducted on the basis of bionic principles to replicate birds' claw and wing movements in order to design a highly biomimetic flapping-wing aircraft capable of perching. First, a posture conversion module with a multi-motor hemispherical gear structure allows the aircraft to flap, twist, swing, and transition between its folded and unfolded states.

The intermolecular host-guest complexation of head-to-tail monomers consisting of cleft-shaped bisporphyrin and trinitrofluorenone units connected by a chiral binaphthyl linker was employed to construct helically twisted supramolecular polymers. Results from 1H NMR, diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy, and viscometry experiments revealed that the supramolecular polymerization of these monomers follows a ring-chain competition mechanism. The introduction of bulky substituents at the linker significantly suppressed the formation of macrocyclic oligomers, whereas smaller alkyl chains facilitated the formation of the cyclic form.

Developing a biosensing prototype utilising a 7CB liquid crystal for human insulin detection.

This paper presents a novel prototype for human insulin detection using a 4-heptyl-4-biphenylcarbonitrile liquid crystal (7CB-LC). Human insulin is essential for regulating blood glucose levels and facilitating the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. Insufficient insulin can lead to hyperglycemia, where cells cannot utilise glucose effectively for energy production.

A twist of the tail in turning maneuvers of bird-inspired drones.

Sci Robot

November 2024

School of Engineering, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, 1015, Switzerland.

Article Synopsis
  • - A banked turn is a flight maneuver where birds and aircraft adjust their lift direction, with birds using specialized wing morphing and tail twisting instead of traditional ailerons.
  • - Researchers created a feathered drone inspired by raptors to study how tail twisting helps achieve coordinated banked turns by influencing lift and yaw moments.
  • - The study showed that manipulating the tail can enhance lift and control during both low-speed and high-speed turns, advancing our understanding of bird flight and offering new techniques for agile drone design.
