Article Abstract

Creating surfaces with superamphiphobic property and optical transparency simultaneously would have fundamental and practical significance but has been proven extremely challenging. Herein, we develop a transparent superamphiphobic coating using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the template by a facile approach. CNTs enwrapped with SiO2 coating was produced by a sol-gel method and then sprayed onto the glass slides to form coatings. Subsequent thermal treatment and surface fluoration allowed the sprayed coating to exhibit enhanced transparency across a broad spectrum of ultraviolet and visible wavelengths and also display superrepellency toward water and a number of organic liquids, such as dodecane. The obtained transparent coating can sustain its superamphiphobicity even after thermal treatment at 400 °C. Separate experiment demonstrated that the CNTs-directed geometrical structure played a key role in establishing superamphiphobicity.

Developing surfaces that effectively repel low-surface-tension liquids with tunable adhesive properties remains a pivotal challenge. Micronano hierarchical re-entrant structures emerge as a promising solution, offering a robust structural defense against liquid penetration, minimizing area fraction, and creating narrow gaps that generate substantial upward Laplace pressure. However, the absence of an efficient, scalable, and tunable construction method has impeded their widespread applications.

We present a facile approach to fabricate superamphiphobic surfaces by spray coating silica-fluoropolymer core-shell particles without substrate pretreatment with an additional binder resin. A series of SiO@poly(1122-heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate) (SiO@PFMA) core-shell particles with core particles of different sizes were prepared via thiol-lactam initiated radical polymerization (TLIRP). The surface of each SiO particle with an average particle size of 12, 80, 150, and 350 nm was modified with (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane and used as a seed for TLIRP.

Numerous research studies have contributed to the development of mature superamphiphobic systems. In this review, we summarize the characterization of surface wettability, the fabrication techniques and the multifunctional applications of polymeric superamphiphobic surfaces inspired from nature. Regarding construction techniques, three types of technology routes, namely pre-roughening and post-modifying, pre-modifying and pre-roughening, and in situ one-step construction, will be successively discussed.

Superamphiphobic surfaces, capable of repelling both water and oil, have been extensively studied recently. Artificial superamphiphobic surfaces with ultralow solid/liquid adhesion and high transparency have been achieved separately. However, simultaneous demonstration of these two features remains a challenge.

Superamphiphobic surfaces have attracted extensive attention from both academic and commercial communities because of their unique wettability. However, big challenge still remains as superamphiphobic surfaces frequently suffer the drawbacks of either easy adhesion of liquids with low surface tension (<27.5 mN m) or low transparency, which in turn seriously hinders their applications.
