The effect of confinement on the droplet formation in T junctions was studied for three configurations of fluid injection. The sizes of the main droplets and the satellite droplets were measured in the squeezing and dripping regimes. The evolution of droplet sizes with capillary number in the continuous phase is similar to that in flow-focusing junctions, i.e., the size of the main droplets decreases with an increase of this capillary number, while the size of the satellite droplets increases with an increase of this capillary number. While in the range of flow rates investigated the injection configuration does not exhibit a significant effect on the main droplet sizes, it does have an effect on the size of the satellite droplets. The latter ones are smaller when the neck rupture of the droplet occurs on an angle of the microsystem.

Electrospray thrusters are a promising electric micropropulsion technology which could be used to meet the propulsion needs of nanosatellites, or for fine attitude control of larger spacecraft. Multimodal propulsion is the integration of two or more propulsion modes into a system which utilizes a common propellant. Indeed, spacecraft mission simulations and models have shown that this type of multimode propulsion capacity is exciting because of the flexibility and adaptability it provides mission designers and planners.

Aircraft observations have revealed ubiquitous new particle formation in the tropical upper troposphere over the Amazon and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Although the vapours involved remain unknown, recent satellite observations have revealed surprisingly high night-time isoprene mixing ratios of up to 1 part per billion by volume (ppbv) in the tropical upper troposphere. Here, in experiments performed with the CERN CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber, we report new particle formation initiated by the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with isoprene at upper-tropospheric temperatures of -30 °C and -50 °C.

Background: Peritumoral edema on staging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is associated with higher local recurrence in soft tissue sarcoma (STS). This may relate to the presence of satellite malignant cells that are difficult to distinguish from benign atypia, leading to over- or undertreatment. This study evaluated a novel targeted molecular approach to identify malignancy in STS peritumoral planes as a means to improve personalized care.

Cloud microphysics studies include how tiny cloud droplets grow and become rain. This is crucial for understanding cloud properties like size, life span, and impact on climate through radiative effects. Small weak-updraft clouds near the haze-to-cloud transition are especially difficult to measure and understand.

The precise control of the assembly structure and size of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) can potentially amplify their near-infrared II (NIR-II) fluorescence imaging and targeting properties. However, the conventional electrostatic assembly of AuNCs and charged molecules faces challenges in balancing the inherent electrostatic repulsions among charged units and regulating the diffusion of assembly units. These difficulties limit precise control over assembly size and structure, along with limited options for coassembled molecules, thereby restricting imaging properties and targeting capability.
