The efficiency and cooling power of a two-terminal thermoelectric refrigerator are analyzed near the limit of vanishing dissipation (ideal system), where the optimal efficiency is the Carnot one, but the cooling power vanishes. This limit, where transport occurs only via a single sharp electronic energy, has been referred to as "strong coupling" or "the best thermoelectric." Confining the discussion to the linear-response regime, it is found that "parasitic" effects that make the system deviate from the ideal limit, and reduce the efficiency from the Carnot limit, are crucial for the usefulness of the device. Among these parasitics, there are: parallel phonon conduction, finite width of the electrons' transport band, and more than a single energy transport channel. In terms of a small parameter characterizing the deviation from the ideal limit, the efficiency and power grow linearly, and the dissipation quadratically. The results are generalized to the case of broken time-reversal symmetry, and the major nontrivial changes are discussed. Finally, the recent universal relation between the thermopower and the asymmetry of the dissipation between the two terminals is briefly discussed, including the small dissipation limit.

Self-powered and broadband opto-sensor with bionic visual adaptation function based on multilayer γ-InSe flakes.

Visual adaptation that can autonomously adjust the response to light stimuli is a basic function of artificial visual systems for intelligent bionic robots. To improve efficiency and reduce complexity, artificial visual systems with integrated visual adaptation functions based on a single device should be developed to replace traditional approaches that require complex circuitry and algorithms. Here, we have developed a single two-terminal opto-sensor based on multilayer γ-InSe flakes, which successfully emulated the visual adaptation behaviors with a new working mechanism combining the photo-pyroelectric and photo-thermoelectric effect.

Department of Physics, College of Sciences, Shihezi University, Shihezi 832000, People's Republic of China.

Recently discovered topological nodal-line semimetals (TNLSMs) have received considerable research interest due to their rich physical properties and potential applications. TNLSMs have the particular band structure to lead to many novel properties. Here we theoretically study the thermoelectric transport of a two-terminal pristine TNLSM nanowires and TNLSMs--junctions.

A Thermoelectric MEMS Microwave Power Sensor with Inline Self-Detection Function.

Micromachines (Basel)

January 2022

Key Laboratory of MEMS of the Ministry of Education, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, China.

In this paper, the design, fabrication and measurement of a thermoelectric MEMS microwave power sensor with the terminal load inline self-detection function is proposed. The structure of the sensor mainly includes a coplanar waveguide, a thermopile, two terminal load resistors and two calibration resistors. In order to realize the inline self-detection function, the load and calibration resistors are designed to form a voltage divider circuit.

We study bounds on ratios of fluctuations in steady-state time-reversal energy conversion devices. In the linear response regime, we prove that the relative fluctuations (precision) of the output current (power) is always lower bounded by the relative fluctuations of the input current (heat current absorbed from the hot bath). As a consequence, the ratio between the fluctuations of the output and input currents are bounded both from above and below, where the lower (upper) bound is determined by the square of the averaged efficiency (square of the Carnot efficiency) of the engine.

Growth of the large-sized and high-quality MoS single crystals for high-performance low-power electronic applications is an important step to pursue. Despite the significant improvement made in minimizing extrinsic MoS contact resistance based on interfacial engineering of the devices, the electron mobility of field-effect transistors (FETs) made of a synthetic monolayer MoS is yet far below the expected theoretical values, implying that the MoS crystal quality needs to be further improved. Here, we demonstrate the high-performance two-terminal MoS FETs with room-temperature electron mobility up to ∼90 cm V s based on the sulfurization growth of the bifunctional precursor, sodium molybdate dihydrate.
