The use of hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffolds for bone regeneration is an alternative procedure to treat bone defects due to cancer, other diseases or traumas. Although the use of HA has been widely studied in the literature, there are still some disparities regarding its mechanical performance. This paper presents a complete analysis of the structural performance of porous HA scaffolds based on experimental tests, numerical simulations and theoretical studies. HA scaffolds with variable porosity were considered and fabricated by the water-soluble polymer method, using poly vinyl alcohol as pore former. These scaffolds were then characterised by scanning electron microscopy, stereo microscopy, X-ray diffraction, porosity analysis and mechanical tests. Different scaffold models were proposed and analysed by the finite element method to obtain numerical predictions of the mechanical properties. Also theoretical predictions based on the (Gibson LJ, Ashby MF. 1988. Cellular solids: structure and properties. Oxford: Pergamon Press) model were obtained. Finally the experimental, numerical and theoretical results were compared. From this comparison, it was observed that the proposed numerical and theoretical models can be used to predict, with adequate accuracy, the mechanical performance of HA scaffolds for different porosity values.

Mismatched electron and proton transport rates impede the manifestation of effective performance of the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), thereby limiting its industrial applications. Inspired by the natural protein cluster in PS-II, different organic-inorganic hybrid electrocatalysts were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. -Toluidine (PT), benzoic acid (BA), and -aminobenzoic acid (PABA) were successfully intercalated into NiFe-LDH.

The present study investigated the neuromodulatory substrates of salience processing and its impact on memory encoding and behaviour, with a specific focus on two distinct types of salience: reward and contextual unexpectedness. 46 Participants performed a novel task paradigm modulating these two aspects independently and allowing for investigating their distinct and interactive effects on memory encoding while undergoing high-resolution fMRI. By using advanced image processing techniques tailored to examine midbrain and brainstem nuclei with high precision, our study additionally aimed to elucidate differential activation patterns in subcortical nuclei in response to reward-associated and contextually unexpected stimuli, including distinct pathways involving in particular dopaminergic modulation.

Background: Cardiac ischemia/reperfusion disrupts plasma membrane integrity and induces various types of programmed cell death. The ESCRT (endosomal sorting complex required for transport) proteins, particularly AAA-ATPase Vps4a (vacuolar protein sorting 4a), play an essential role in the surveillance of membrane integrity. However, the role of ESCRT proteins in the context of cardiac injury remains unclear.

In this study, the kidneys of ground squirrels (hibernated and nonhibernated), rabbits, and rats were examined macro and microanatomically. Kidney morphology was investigated by stereo microscopy, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Triple and immunohistochemical staining were performed for light microscopic examinations.

This study investigates the structural and dynamic properties of ternary mixtures composed of NaPF, ethylene carbonate (EC), and the ionic liquid choline glycine (ChGly), with a focus on their potential as electrolytes for supercapacitors. The combination of NaPF-EC, known for its high ionic conductivity, with the biodegradable and environmentally friendly ChGly offers a promising approach to enhancing electrolyte performance. Through molecular simulations, we analyze how the inclusion of small concentrations of ChGly affects key properties such as density, cohesive energy, and ion mobility.
