While carboranes with 2 n+2 and 2 n+4 (n=number of skeletal atoms) skeletal electrons (SE) are widely known, little has been reported on carboranes with odd SE numbers. Electrochemical measurements on two-cage assemblies, where two C-phenyl-ortho-carboranyl groups are linked by a para-phenylene or a para-tetrafluorophenylene bridge, revealed two well separated and reversible two-electron reduction waves indicating formation of stable dianions and tetraanions. The salts of the dianions were isolated by reduction with sodium metal and their unusual structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. The diamagnetic dianions contain two 2 n+3 SE clusters where each cluster has a notably long carborane C-carborane C distance of ca 2.4 Å. The π conjugation within the phenylene bridge plays an important role in the stabilization of these carboranes with odd SE counts.

The heating of the 18-electron complex [3,3-(dppb)-3-H-3-Cl-closo-3,1,2-RuC(2)B(9)H(11)] (3) in benzene at 80 °C in the presence of a small amount of CCl(4) as initiator afforded paramagnetic 17-electron species [3,3-(dppb)-3-Cl-closo-3,1,2-RuC(2)B(9)H(11)] (4) along with minor amounts of two P-phenylene ortho-cycloboronated derivatives [3-Cl-3,3,8-{Ph(2)P(CH(2))(4)PPh-μ-(C(6)H(4)-ortho)}-closo-3,1,2-RuC(2)B(9)H(10)] (5) and [3,7-Cl(2)-3,3,8-{Ph(2)P(CH(2))(4)PPh-μ-(C(6)H(4)-ortho)}-closo-3,1,2-RuC(2)B(9)H(10)] (6) in total yield of ca. 80%. The heating of either 3 or 4 in toluene at 95 °C in the absence of CCl(4) led to the selective formation of 5, which was isolated in 64% and 46% yield, respectively.

Silicon-bismuth and germanium-bismuth clusters of high stability.

Mixed metal-semiconductor clusters of the form Bi2Si(n-2) and Bi2Ge(n-2), n = 3-8, 12, are studied theoretically by ab initio methods including density functional theory with the hybrid B3LYP functional, second-order perturbation, and coupled cluster CCSD(T) theory using the doubly polarized TZV2P basis sets. These clusters are characterized by high stability and symmetry and relatively large highest occupied-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energy gaps. It is shown that the lower energy structures of these clusters and their bonding and electronic characteristics are fully compatible with very powerful stability rules and structural laws similar to the ones for the corresponding isovalent boranes, carboranes, and bisboranes.

Some newly synthesized (10)B nido-carborane derivatives, i.e., 7,8-dicarba-nido-undecaborane monoanions ([7-Me-8-R-C(2)B(9)H(10)](-)K(+), R = H, butyl, hexyl, octyl and decyl), have been fully characterised and examined by electrospray ionization and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry with liquid chromatographic separation (LC/ESI-FTICR-MS).

The aromatic, bonding, and structural characteristics of the Si 4C 2H 2-C 2B 4H 6, Si 2C 4H 4-C 4B 2H 6, and other Si n C 2H 2-C 2B n H n+2 ( n = 1, 2, 3, 5) isovalent pairs are studied using density functional theory (DFT) and coupled cluster methods to fully illustrate the homology of the two species. This homology, which is based on the replacement of the carborane B-H units by isovalent Si atoms, is extended to all three characteristics (structural, electronic, and aromatic) and includes all three lowest-energy structures of the isovalent pairs. This type of "boron connection", which has been tested for silicon clusters recently, seems to be a valid and extremely useful concept.
