Effect of PEG-mediated pore forming on Ca-alginate immobilization of nitrilase-producing bacteria Pseudomonas putida XY4 was studied. Through using PEG as porogen, the environmental tolerance as well as the biocatalytic reaction efficiency of immobilized cells was greatly improved, i.e., Ca-alginate-PEG immobilized cells got better temperature and substrate concentration tolerance than Ca-alginate immobilized cells and showed similar efficiency with free cells, suggesting that the intrinsic mass transfer resistance of immobilization obviously decreased. It was also observed that the pore diameter and porosity of immobilization beads were related with the molecular weight of PEG. PEG400 was found to be a relatively suitable porogen for Ca-alginate-PEG immobilized cells catalyzed hydrolysis of glycinonitrile. It was noteworthy that the Ca-alginate-PEG immobilized cells could be reused more than 18 times with little loss of enzyme activity which had shown good operation ability and great application potential.

Phenolic compounds are an extensive group of natural and anthropogenic organic substances of the aromatic series containing one or more hydroxyl groups. The main sources of phenols entering the environment are waste from metallurgy and coke plants, enterprises of the leather, furniture, and pulp and paper industries, as well as wastewater from the production of phenol-formaldehyde resins, adhesives, plastics, and pesticides. Among this group of compounds, phenol is the most common environmental pollutant.

Although bioremediation is considered the most environmentally friendly and sustainable technique for remediating contaminated soil and water, it is most effective when combined with physicochemical methods, which allow for the preliminary removal of large quantities of pollutants. This allows microorganisms to efficiently eliminate the remaining contaminants. In addition to requiring the necessary genes and degradation pathways for specific substrates, as well as tolerance to adverse environmental conditions, microorganisms may perform below expectations.

Intravenously transplanted mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been shown to interact with endothelial cells and to migrate to tissues. However, intracellular signals regulating MSC migration are still incompletely understood. Here, we analyzed the role of Rap1 GTPase in the migration of human bone marrow-derived MSCs in vitro and in short-term homing in mice in vivo.

Significant agro-industrial waste is produced during the winemaking process, including grape stalks, which are a rich source of the valuable biopolymer holocellulose that can be utilized for biotechnological processes. The purpose of this study was to delignify grape stalks in order to extract holocellulose. Then Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) was immobilized in the interstitial spaces of holocellulose and then coated with natural polymers (chitosan, Ch; and alginate, Al) to create the Holo-LP/Ch/Al complex.

The synergy between nanomaterials as solid supports and supramolecular concepts has resulted in nanomaterials with hierarchical structure and enhanced functionality. Herein, we developed and investigated innovative supramolecular functionalities arising from the synergy between organic moieties and the preexisting nanoscale soft material backbones. Based on these complex molecular nano-architectures, a new nanorod carbohydrate polymer carrier was designed with bifunctional hairy nanocellulose (BHNC) to reveal dual-responsive advanced drug delivery (ADD).
