Most insects harbor two paralogous circadian genes, namely timeout and timeless. However, in the Hymenoptera only timeout is present. It remains unclear whether both genes, especially timeout in hymenopteran insects, have distinct evolutionary patterns. In this study, we examine the molecular evolution of both genes in 25 arthropod species, for which whole genome data are available, with addition of the daily expression of the timeout gene in a pollinating fig wasp, Ceratosolen solmsi (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Agaonidae). Timeless is under stronger purifying selection than timeout, and timeout has positively selected sites in insects, especially in the Hymenoptera. Within the Hymenoptera, the function of timeout may be conserved in bees and ants, but still evolving rapidly in some wasps such as the chalcids. In fig wasps, timeout is rhythmically expressed only in females when outside of the fig syconium but arrhythmically in male and female wasps inside the syconium. These plastic gene expressions reflect adaptive differences of males and females to their environment.

Background: Operative fires are rare but unforgettable events, with the potential for devastating outcomes. It is estimated that 650 operating room (OR) fires occur each year in the United States, with the use of electrocautery devices and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) as the primary ignition and fuel sources. There are several case reports of OR fires caused by PMMA and electrocautery in the literature, but, to our knowledge, no formal studies have been performed exposing the flammability of PMMA and how PMMA reacts to an electrocautery ignition source.

Time-out is an empirically supported component of parenting interventions for child conduct problems; however, it is receiving increasing criticism among parents and some practitioners. This study aimed to investigate practitioners' use and acceptability of time-out for child conduct problems; examine whether perceived effectiveness and knowledge of evidence-based parameters of time-out implementation influence use and acceptability of time-out; and explore practitioners' perceptions about alternatives to time-out. One hundred and ten Australian and New Zealand practitioners who have worked with children and families completed an online survey investigating their use and acceptability of time-out for children with conduct problems.

To increase bandwidth and overcome packet loss in Wide Area Networks (WANs), per-packet multipath transmission and redundant transmission are increasingly being used as Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) solutions. However, this results in out-of-order and duplicate packets in the destination network. To restore sequential and unique data streams for multiple connections, hardware packet buffers with significant depth are required due to the large delay difference between WAN paths.

Importance: Wrong-level spine surgery (WLSS), a medical error in which a surgeon operates at an unintended vertebral level, is considered a "never event." However, it continues to be a problem in spine surgery today despite the implementation of preventive measures such as the Universal Protocol. The consequences of this event are severe for both the afflicted patient and the treating physician and may result not only in physical harm but also in costly medicolegal proceedings.
