Nitrogen (N) is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development. Plants adapt to changes in N availability partly by changes in global gene expression. We integrated publicly available root microarray data under contrasting nitrate conditions to identify new genes and functions important for adaptive nitrate responses in Arabidopsis thaliana roots. Overall, more than 2000 genes exhibited changes in expression in response to nitrate treatments in Arabidopsis thaliana root organs. Global regulation of gene expression by nitrate depends largely on the experimental context. However, despite significant differences from experiment to experiment in the identity of regulated genes, there is a robust nitrate response of specific biological functions. Integrative gene network analysis uncovered relationships between nitrate-responsive genes and 11 highly co-expressed gene clusters (modules). Four of these gene network modules have robust nitrate responsive functions such as transport, signaling, and metabolism. Network analysis hypothesized G2-like transcription factors are key regulatory factors controlling transport and signaling functions. Our meta-analysis highlights the role of biological processes not studied before in the context of the nitrate response such as root hair development and provides testable hypothesis to advance our understanding of nitrate responses in plants.

Nutrient losses via subsurface tile cause environmental degradation of aquatic ecosystems. Various management practices are primarily aimed at reduction of nitrate leaching in tile discharge; however, studies on leaching of other nutrients are limited. A replicated plot experiment was initiated in 2016 as part of the Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network Croplands Common Experiment to quantify the effectiveness of management practices on leaching of NO-N, total P, K, and S from drained soils.

The nitrogen cycle has an important impact on the element cycle of the soil ecosystem. Moreover, it is important to clarify the key environmental factors of nitrogen cycle microorganisms for ecological restoration in mining areas. The functional flora can regulate the growth of vegetation by participating in the biogeochemical cycle of soil elements in the mining area, which is beneficial to the reclamation of the mining area.

Nitrate pollution in water bodies is a worldwide environmental problem, and identifying the sources of nitrate is of great significance to guarantee the sustainable use of water resources. A variety of water chemistry indicators and nitrate nitrogen and oxygen isotopes (N-NO and O-NO) were used to analyze the water chemistry characteristics of water bodies in Shiyan to identify the sources of nitrate in the water bodies and to calculate the contribution rate of nitrate from different pollution sources of the water bodies using the SIMMR model. The results showed that the hydrochemical types of surface water and groundwater in the study area were dominated by the HCO-Ca·Mg type, and the formation of nitrate in the water body was mainly affected by nitrification, with non-obvious denitrification.

In many countries worldwide, NO emissions currently decrease as a result of pollution control, while NH emissions stagnate or continue to increase. Little is known about horizontal deposition of NO and NH, the oxidation/neutralization products of these primary pollutants. To close the knowledge gap, we studied atmospheric inputs of NO and NH at two mountain-top sites near the Czech-German-Polish borders during winter.

Reusing treated wastewater (TWW) for crop irrigation has shown to provide environmental and economic benefits as well as drawbacks. This study was conducted using soils collected from a wastewater reuse facility in Tallahassee, FL, mainly to elucidate the long-term impact(s) of TWW irrigation on soil microbiome and nutrient status. Approximately 890 ha of land have been spray-irrigated with TWW since the 1980's to grow fodder crops.
