Optical coherence tomography features of POEMS syndrome and Castleman disease-associated papillopathy.

Semmelweis University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology , Budapest , Hungary , and.

Published: December 2014

Purpose: To report ocular symptoms and optical coherence tomography (OCT) features of polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal gammopathy, and skin changes (POEMS) syndrome.

Methods: Case report of two Caucasian patients with POEMS, one of whom also had multicentric Castleman disease.

Results: Both patients presented with edema on both optic disks, bilateral macular edema was seen in case 1, and peripapillary choroidal neovascularization was seen on the right side in case 2. OCT confirmed papilledema involving all retinal layers, with additional bilateral peripapillary serous retinal detachment involving the macula in both cases, and peripapillary CNV in case 2. Changes in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, total peripapillary retinal thickness, and macular detachment were followed with OCT over the course of the disease and after administration of systemic therapy.

Conclusion: OCT examination of the optic nerve head and the macula has an important additional role in the diagnosis and follow-up of POEMS syndrome and Castleman disease.

Intravascular Imaging as a Performance Measure for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

Circ Cardiovasc Interv

January 2025

Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle (E.J.S., T. Salahuddin, J.A.D.).

Background: Intravascular imaging (IVI) is widely recognized to improve outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, IVI is underutilized and is not yet established as a performance measure for quality PCI.

Methods: We examined temporal trends of IVI use for all PCIs performed at Veterans Affairs hospitals in the United States from 2010 to 2022 using retrospective observational cohorts.

The effect of the Rho-kinase inhibitor ripasudil on the retinal optic nerve fiber layer (RNFL) remains unclear. We aimed to determine this effect in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) using optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements and linear mixed analysis. This study prospectively included outpatients from a single center with POAG without a history of vitreoretinal or glaucoma surgery from December 2014 to June 2020, in whom the circumpapillary RNFL thickness (cpRNFLT) was measured more than three times before and after ripasudil initiation, without additional medication or surgery during the period.

The quantum-well-like two-dimensional lead-halide perovskites exhibit strongly confined excitons due to the quantum confinement and reduced dielectric screening effect, which feature intriguing excitonic effects. The ionic nature of the perovskite crystal and the "softness" of the lattice induce the complex lattice dynamics. There are still open questions about how the soft lattices decorate the nature of excitons in these hybrid materials.

Purpose: To compare the anatomical and visual outcomes in eyes with submacular hemorrhage (SMH) treated with a combination of ranibizumab (RBZ) either innovator or biosimilar (Razumab) and intravitreal perfluoropropane gas (CF).

Methods: Treatment naïve neovascular age related macular degeneration (n-AMD) patients with SMH were retrospectively analyzed. Patients received either innovator or biosimilar RBZ (3 loading doses followed by pro re nata regimen) and single injection of intravitreal CF.

Background: To report a case of intraocular inflammation (IOI) after intravitreal injection of aflibercept 8 mg for treatment-refractory neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Case Presentation: An 80-year-old man with diabetes mellitus had neovascular age-related macular degeneration refractory to treatment with aflibercept 2 mg. Despite ten injections of faricimab, the exudation remained, and we switched to brolucizumab, which resulted in a mild IOI.
