Optical hemoglobin and oxygen saturation sensor (OHOS) monitor when used in combination with other hemodynamic tools may be useful for continuous hemodynamic monitoring during ultrafiltration. The stand-alone OHOS monitor can easily be deployed predialyzer into the extracorporeal circuit of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) systems. To maximize the accuracy of the OHOS in 24 hr CRRT systems, clotting in the optical blood chamber and the presensor dilution incurred by replacement fluid should be minimized. Sustained low-efficiency dialysis (SLED) with regional citrate anticoagulation is a therapy that incorporates an OHOS and maintains the overall reliability of hemoglobin (Hb) and saturation sensing. The system operates at a blood flow rate of 60 ml/min and a fixed acid citrate infusion rate of 150 ml/hr. The presensor dilution incurred by concentrated citrate infusion would result in a minimal Hb dilution (<0.7 g/dl) while minimizing optical blood chamber clotting during 24 hr SLED.

Introduction: COVID-19 severity and high in-hospital mortality are often associated with severe hypoxemia, hyperlactatemia, and acidosis, yet the key players driving this association remain unclear. It is generally assumed that organ damage causes toxic acidosis, but since neutrophil numbers in severe COVID-19 can exceed 80% of the total circulating leukocytes, we asked if metabolic acidosis mediated by the glycolytic neutrophils is associated with lung damage and impaired oxygen delivery in critically ill patients.
Methods: Based on prospective mortality outcome, critically ill COVID-19 patients were divided into ICU- survivors and ICU-non-survivors.

The kidney plays an important role in iron homeostasis and mesangial cells (MCs) are phagocytic cells important for glomerular homeostasis. Sickle hemoglobin (HbS) modulators are promising clinical candidates for treatment of sickle cell disease. Although they prevent disease pathophysiology of HbS polymerization and red blood cell (RBC) sickling by increasing hemoglobin oxygen affinity, higher oxygen affinity can also cause transient tissue hypoxia with compensatory increases in erythropoiesis and subsequent increases in RBC turnover.

Background: Patients with acute and high-risk pulmonary embolism have a high mortality rate, and the optimal treatment for these patients has still not been fully established. Although anticoagulation therapy is currently the preferred treatment for pulmonary embolism, for some patients with intermediate- or high-risk pulmonary embolism, anticoagulation therapy alone has a higher probability of long-term pulmonary hypertension and also seriously worsens the quality of life of patients. This paper mainly reports the efficacy and safety of percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (PMT) in patients with acute medium- or high-risk pulmonary embolism in Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang Province so as to provide some clinical basis for the treatment of such patients in the future.

Cupping therapy, a traditional Chinese medicinal practice, has been subjected to scientific scrutiny to validate its effects on local tissue microenvironments. This study provides a quantitative assessment of cupping therapy at different negative pressures using photoacoustic imaging. Low-pressure cupping (-20 kPa) significantly improved local blood circulation, evidenced by increased hemoglobin oxygen saturation and vessel dilation that normalized within two hours.
