Biocontrol techniques that impair reproductive capacity of insect pests provide opportunities to control the dynamics of their populations while minimizing collateral damage to non-target species and the environment. The Trojan Female Technique, or TFT, is a method of the trans-generational fertility-based population control through the release of females that carry mitochondrial DNA mutations that negatively affect male, but not female, reproductive output. TFT is based on the evolutionary hypothesis that, due to maternal inheritance of mitochondria, mutations which are beneficial or neutral in females but harmful in males can accumulate in the mitochondrial genome without selection acting against them.

Dependence of NPPS creates a targetable vulnerability in RAS-mutant cancers.

Acta Pharmacol Sin

Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology, College of Basic Medical Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, 200025, China.

RAS is the most frequently mutated oncoprotein for cancer driving. Understanding of RAS biology and discovery of druggable lynchpins in RAS pathway is a prerequisite for targeted therapy of RAS-mutant cancers. The recent identification of KRAS inhibitor breaks the "undruggable" curse on RAS and has changed the therapy paradigm of KRAS-mutant cancers.

Social Reintegration and Stigma Among Childhood Cancer Survivors in West Kenya.

J Adolesc Young Adult Oncol

October 2024

Emma Children's Hospital, Amsterdam UMC, Paediatric Oncology, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • The population of childhood cancer survivors in low- and middle-income countries, like Kenya, is growing due to better diagnosis and treatment, but stigma still makes it hard for them to reintegrate into society.
  • A study involving 26 young adult survivors revealed that many faced challenges in school, including bullying and missed classes, while most felt they couldn't openly discuss their cancer experiences due to stigma.
  • To improve social reintegration, survivors suggested educational outreach in communities and schools, as well as support through counseling and peer groups.

The past decade has seen increasing interest in applying Deep Learning (DL) to Computational Science and Engineering (CSE). Driven by impressive results in applications such as computer vision, Uncertainty Quantification (UQ), genetics, simulations and image processing, DL is increasingly supplanting classical algorithms, and seems poised to revolutionize scientific computing. However, DL is not yet well-understood from the standpoint of numerical analysis.
