Basal cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumour of skin, comprising 80% of non-melanoma cancers. Intermittent exposure to ultraviolet radiation is an important risk factor. Pigmented basal cell carcinoma is a clinical and histological variant of basal cell carcinoma that exhibits increased pigmentation. It is a very rare variant, although its frequency can reach upto 6% of total basal cell carcinomas in Hispanics. Herein, we are reporting 2 cases of pigmented basal cell carcinoma.

The underlying mechanisms explaining the differential course of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the potential clinical consequences after COVID-19 resolution have not been fully elucidated. As a dysregulated mitochondrial activity could impair the immune response, we explored long-lasting changes in mitochondrial functionality, circulating cytokine levels, and metabolomic profiles of infected individuals after symptoms resolution, to evaluate whether a complete recovery could be achieved. Results of this pilot study evidenced that different parameters of aerobic respiration in lymphocytes of individuals recuperated from a severe course lagged behind those shown upon mild COVID-19 recovery, in basal conditions and after simulated reinfection, and they also showed altered glycolytic capacity.

Erythropoietin (EPO) is pivotal in regulating red blood cell (erythrocyte) concentrations and is primarily synthesized in the kidney. Recent research has unveiled a possible link between elevated circulating concentrations of ketone bodies (KB) and circulating EPO concentrations, however, it is not known whether nutritionally induced endogenous ketogenesis can be a stimulus to induce EPO in humans. Therefore, this study aimed to assess whether acute and chronic intake of medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA)-containing triacylglycerol (MCT), which rapidly enhances endogenous circulating KB, would elevate circulating EPO concentrations in humans, as indicated by prior work with exogenous KB administration.

The sodium phosphate cotransporter-2A (NPT2A) mediates basal and parathyroid hormone (PTH)- and fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23)-regulated phosphate transport in proximal tubule cells of the kidney. Both basal and hormone-sensitive transport require sodium hydrogen exchanger regulatory factor-1 (NHERF1), a scaffold protein with tandem PDZ domains, PDZ1 and PDZ2. NPT2A binds to PDZ1.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains one of the leading causes of death. Because of the individual nature of the trauma (brain, circumstances and forces), humans experience individual TBIs. This makes it difficult to generalise therapies.

The spontaneous firing of the sinoatrial (SA) node, the physiological pacemaker of the heart, is generated within sinoatrial nodal cells (SANCs) and is regulated by a "coupled-clock" pacemaker system, which integrates a "membrane clock", the ensemble of ion channel currents, and an intracellular "Ca clock", sarcoplasmic reticulum-generated local submembrane Ca releases via ryanodine receptors. The interactions within a "coupled-clock" system are modulated by phosphorylation of surface membrane and sarcoplasmic reticulum proteins. Though the essential role of a high basal cAMP level and PKA-dependent phosphorylation for basal spontaneous SANC firing is well recognized, the role of basal CaMKII-dependent phosphorylation remains uncertain.
