: The current gold standards for diagnosing acute kidney injury (AKI) are an increase in serum creatinine and a decrease in urine output, which are inadequate for rapid diagnosis. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a 25-kDa protein produced and secreted by injured kidney tubule epithelial cells, and can serve as an early urinary biomarker for AKI. ProNephro AKI (NGAL) is an immunoassay for the quantitative determination of NGAL in urine (uNGAL) that recently received FDA clearance.

Background:  Fibrinolysis is spatiotemporally well-regulated and greatly influenced by activated platelets and coagulation activity. Our previous real-time imaging analyses revealed that clotting commences on activated platelet surfaces, resulting in uneven-density fibrin structures, and that fibrinolysis initiates in dense fibrin regions and extends to the periphery. Despite the widespread clinical use of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), their impact on thrombin-dependent activation of thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) and fibrinolysis remains unclear.

Introduction: A stone is a compact mass of one or more crystallised substances. The essential mechanism of stone formation is an excessive concentration of poorly soluble compounds in the urine. In excessive concentration, these compounds precipitate into crystals, which then aggregate to form a stone.

Menaquinone-7 and its therapeutic potential in type 2 diabetes mellitus based on a Zucker diabetic fatty rat model.

Heliyon

December 2024

Institute of Clinical Chemistry, Laboratory Medicine and Transfusion Medicine, Nuremberg General Hospital, Paracelsus Medical University, Prof. Ernst Nathan Str. 1, 90419, Nuremberg, Germany.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is marked by insulin resistance, low grade chronic inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. Vitamin K2, especially menaquinone-7 (MK-7), might delay T2DM progression and alleviate its consequences. Hence, this study evaluated the effects of MK-7 on serum and urine markers of diabetes in an animal model of T2DM.

Comparison of radial immunodiffusion, turbidimetric immunoassay, and Brix refractometry for determining bovine colostrum quality.

Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853.

Determining the concentration of IgG in colostrum is critical for assessment of colostrum quality. On-farm use of a Brix refractometer to estimate colostrum IgG concentration is widespread, whereas radial immunodiffusion (RID) is the laboratory reference method. Turbidimetric immunoassay (TIA) might offer an alternative method to quantify IgG in colostrum, but the agreement with RID, as well as critical thresholds to determine high-quality colostrum, remain uncertain.
