IL-33 and soluble ST2 in follicular fluid are associated with premature ovarian insufficiency.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Center for Reproductive Medicine, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Background: Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a common reproductive disease that is associated with chronic inflammation in ovaries. Interleukin 33 (IL-33) is a pro-inflammatory IL-1 family cytokine, and functions as an alarmin reflecting inflammatory reaction. Our study aimed to investigate levels of IL-33 and its soluble receptor (sST2) in both follicular fluid (FF) and paired serum during different stages of POI, and evaluate their predictive potentials for POI.

Article Synopsis
  • Poor ovarian response (POR) affects women over 35 with low ovarian reserve, making it hard to achieve live births; this study tests astaxanthin as a treatment to improve outcomes.
  • 60 POR patients underwent a trial, receiving either astaxanthin or a placebo while monitoring various oxidative stress and inflammation markers.
  • Results showed that the astaxanthin group had better serum antioxidant levels and lower inflammatory markers, though no main differences were found in follicular fluid; this suggests astaxanthin might help with ovarian response in ART.

Decoding molecular features of bovine oocyte fate during antral follicle growth via single-cell multi-omics analysis†.

Biol Reprod

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Animal Biotech Breeding, Frontiers Science Center for Molecular Design Breeding (MOE), College of Animal Science and Technology, China Agricultural University, Beijing, China.

Antral follicle size is a useful predictive marker of the competency of enclosed oocytes for yielding an embryo following in vitro maturation and fertilization. However, the molecular mechanisms underpinning oocyte developmental potential during bovine antral follicle growth are still unclear. Here, we used a modified single-cell multi-omics approach to analyze the transcriptome, DNA methylome, and chromatin accessibility in parallel for oocytes and cumulus cells collected from bovine antral follicles of different sizes.
