The aim of this study was to determine diversity in members of the family Enterobacteriaceae including the beta-lactamase producing isolates associated with the Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris). 81 isolates, each representing a distinct colonial morphotype, were obtained from fecal samples of Spanish slugs and analyzed. Genetically heterogeneous or similar groups were assessed among the isolates by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR and further characterized by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Representative strains were allocated to the genera Citrobacter, Raoultella, Escherichia, Klebsiella, Kluyvera, and Buttiauxella. Fifteen isolates, most closely related to Citrobacter freundii and Escherichia coli, displayed an AmpC phenotype, one E. coli isolate showed an ESBL phenotype. These isolates were phenotypically and genotypically characterized by their antimicrobial resistance pattern. Phylogenetic background and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) of the E. coli isolates were determined. The multi-drug resistant TEM-1 E. coli positive isolate belongs to the phylogenetic group A and ST10. The CMY-2 positive E. coli isolate belongs to the phylogenetic group D and ST117. Our results show that the common garden slug represents an important potential vector of β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae.

Probing Surface Reactions on Multicomponent Glass Using Reflection-Absorption Infrared Spectroscopy.

The chemical reactivity of glass surfaces is often studied with elemental analysis techniques, and although such characterization methods provide insights on compositional changes from exposure to specific chemical conditions, molecule-specific chemical reactions are not determined unambiguously. This study demonstrates the use of reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) to detect molecular species on alkali-free boroaluminosilicate and alkali aluminosilicate glasses, using acetic acid vapor as a model reactant to probe reaction sites at the surface with or without pretreatment by aqueous solutions of varied pH. With the assistance of the theoretical calculation of spectral changes based on refractive indices of bulk materials, it was possible to identify the molecular species being removed and produced at the glass surface.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) leads to a more rapid development of DM cardiomyopathy (dbCM) and progression to heart failure in women than men. Combination of high-fat diet (HFD) and freshly-injected streptozotocin (STZ) has been widely used for DM induction, however emerging data shows that anomer-equilibrated STZ produces an early onset and robust DM model. We designed a novel protocol utilising a combination of multiple doses of anomer-equilibrated STZ injections and HFD to develop a stable murine DM model featuring dbCM analogous to humans.

This study aimed to explore the effects of egg albumin protein addition (5, 15 and 20 g/100 g db) on the textural characteristics, as well as in the in vitro digestibility of protein and starch of wheat bread. Egg albumin addition resulted in smoother bread loaves as compared to traditional wheat bread. Reduced hardness and increased cohesiveness were correlated to the protein secondary structure, mainly with the content of β-sheets.
