We have recently proved that the serial coupling of RP and zwitterionic hydrophilic interaction LC with mass spectrometric detection is a versatile and reliable technique to simultaneously separate polar and apolar compounds in complex samples, for example, phenols in wine. In order to evaluate the system suitability for long-term usage, the robustness of a method based on the serial coupling of RP and zwitterionic hydrophilic interaction LC was evaluated after one year of analyses comprising >1100 injections. The retention time and peak shape of phenol standards and phenols in a red wine were compared to the values previously published. Phenol retention times were shifted <30 s. However, the peak widths were increased, partially due to the deterioration of the stationary phases. Nevertheless, the method was still highly reliable for the analysis of phenols in wine.

Single cell transcriptomics (SCT) has revolutionized our understanding of cellular heterogeneity, yet the emergence of single cell proteomics (SCP) promises a more functional view of cellular dynamics. A challenge is that not all mass spectrometry facilities can perform SCP, and not all laboratories have access to cell sorting equipment required for SCP, which together motivate an interest in sending bulk cell samples through the mail for sorting and SCP analysis. Shipping requires cell storage, which has an unknown effect on SCP results.

Known for its remarkable diversity and ecological importance, the fungal kingdom remains largely unexplored. In fact, the number of unknown and undescribed fungi is predicted to exceed the number of known fungal species by far. Despite efforts to uncover these dark fungal taxa, we still face inherent sampling biases and methodological limitations.

Clinical mastitis, a prevalent production disease in the dairy industry, causes significant pain and swelling in dairy cows' udders. While previous research highlights a symbiotic relationship between humans and animals, particularly in terms of health, this study investigates how animal health, specifically clinical mastitis, influences farmers' well-being. Acknowledging farmers' pivotal role in mitigating animal health problems, we examined the human-animal relationship by exploring how dairy cow health relates to the psychological well-being of dairy farmers.

Sub-ångström spatial resolution of electron density coupled with sub-femtosecond to few-femtosecond temporal resolution is required to directly observe the dynamics of the electronic structure of a molecule after photoinitiation or some other ultrafast perturbation, such as by soft X-rays. Meeting this challenge, pushing the field of quantum crystallography to attosecond timescales, would bring insights into how the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom couple, enable the study of quantum coherences involved in molecular dynamics, and ultimately enable these dynamics to be controlled. Here, we propose to reach this realm by employing convergent-beam x-ray crystallography with high-power attosecond pulses from a hard-x-ray free-electron laser.
