Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy for Cutaneous Wounds. | LitMetric

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy for Cutaneous Wounds.

Adv Wound Care (New Rochelle)

Department of Surgery and Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington.

Published: August 2012

Background: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) treatment of wounds results in accelerated wound closure, increased granulation tissue formation, and increased angiogenesis. These adult stem cells exert their therapeutic effects primarily by secreting soluble factors that regulate cellular responses to cutaneous injury.

The Problem: There is an urgent need for novel therapies for the treatment of wounds with delayed healing. Current treatment options for chronic nonhealing wounds and burns are limited and not always effective, despite significant advances in wound care including application of bioengineered skin equivalents and growth factors.

Basic/clinical Science Advances: The three target articles advance the field by addressing critical gaps in knowledge about MSC function and mechanism during wound healing. The first target article provides the first evidence that MSCs regulate macrophage phenotype in wounds. The second target article demonstrates that diabetes mellitus impairs the ability of MSCs to promote wound healing and this can be rescued by a novel lipid mediator deficit in diabetic wounds. The final target article reports that the surgical technique of tissue expansion is enhanced by MSCs.

Clinical Care Relevance: MSC therapy suppresses inflammation in wounds and may be more effective when used in conjunction with other therapeutics that modulate the diabetic wound environment. It also shows potential as an adjunctive therapy for surgical tissue expansion.

Conclusion: MSCs represent promising emerging therapies for wounds with delayed healing such as chronic nonhealing wounds and burns.

Hoverflies are essential to ecosystems, with adults serving as important pollinators and larvae preying on plant-feeding insects or recycling nutrients. Species like Sphaerophoria rueppellii are used in biocontrol programs to target aphid pests. To enhance these programs, markers can be used in a mark-release-recapture (MRR) method to track hoverfly feeding and oviposition sites.

Superbugs, as bacterial resistance species, resist known antibiotics. In this study, twenty novel 1,2,4-triazole-functionalized piperazine-stearic acid derivatives 6a-p were designed, synthesized, and characterized via spectroscopic analyses, evaluating their antimicrobial potential against clinically relevant bacterial and fungal strains. Notably, five derivatives (6a, 6c, 6m, 6n, and 6o) demonstrated superior antimicrobial efficacy compared to gentamicin standard, with compound 6n showing the most potent activity (MIC = 3.

In health, the gut microbiome functions as a stable ecosystem maintaining overall balance and ensuring its own survival against environmental stressors through complex microbial interaction. This balance and protection from stressors is maintained through interactions both within the bacterial ecosystem as well as with its host. As a consequence, the gut microbiome plays a critical role in various physiological processes including maintaining the structure and function of the gut barrier, educating the gut immune system, and modulating the gut motor, digestive/absorptive, as well as neuroendocrine system all of which are crucial for human health and disease pathogenesis.
