The main purpose of this article is to provide some practical insights into acid-base disorders interpretation, comparing the three most widespread diagnostic approaches. After a brief summary of the history of blood gas analysis and the shift from a purely chemical approach to more clinically useful applications, the pros and cons of the different methodologies are compared and discussed. Reviewing the most important publications in the field, the authors attempt to show that each diagnostic strategy is acceptable, although the one based on base-excess calculation perhaps seems too 'rough' to understand the mixed disorders, whereas the Stewart approach is attractive from a chemical point of view, but unsuitable for the emergency physician because of the cumbersome calculations needed. Finally, the anion gap and 'expected compensation' approach seems to be more comprehensive and feasible at the bedside.

Defects in DNA single-strand break repair are associated with neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. One such disorder is that resulting from mutations in , a scaffold protein that plays a central role in DNA single-strand base repair. XRCC1 is recruited at sites of single-strand breaks by PARP1, a protein that detects and is activated by such breaks and is negatively regulated by XRCC1 to prevent excessive PARP binding and activity.

Purpose: Perioperative metabolic acidosis negatively affects patient outcomes. Perioperative fluid therapy has a clinically significant effect on acid-base balance. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of isotonic sodium bicarbonate infusion (ISB) versus balanced crystalloid solution (BCS) on perioperative acid-base balance, in terms of postoperative base excess, among patients undergoing emergency laparotomy for perforation peritonitis.

Background: Our study aims to evaluate the umbilical vein (UV) hemodynamic change in the prenatal cohort of pregnancies diagnosed with abnormal placental cord insertion (aPCI).
Methods: From January 2022 to December 2022, the fetal umbilical cord insertion site was sonographically examined in singleton fetuses, and umbilical cord blood flow was calculated. The umbilical artery and UV Doppler flow indexes were assessed in cases of normal and abnormal cord insertion.

The birth and development of supramolecular chemistry have heralded a new era, where macrocycles have become an irreplaceable research tool. Therefore, the construction of novel macrocycles has become a hot spot. Tröger's base (TB), as a fragment with both rigidity and chirality, promises tremendous potential in the realm of supramolecular chemistry, and its unique properties continue to motivate researchers to explore its inclusion in macrocycles.

The bipyridyl tantalum complex (2,6-PrCHO)Ta(bipy) () is synthesized by the reaction of (2,6-PrCHO)TaCl () and 2,2'-bipyridine in the presence of excess potassium graphite (KC). Complex coordinates readily with pyridine and 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (dmap) to form Lewis base adducts (2,6-PrCHO)Ta(bipy)(L) (L = py (), dmap ()), and it exhibits rich redox reactivity toward small molecules: (a) single electron transfer (SET) occurs upon exposure of to phenyl sulfide or selenide dimer, giving the open-shell, bipy-centered radical complexes (2,6-PrCHO)Ta(bipy)(PhE) (E = S (), Se ()). (b) Regioselective C-C σ-bond formation via radical coupling is observed in the SET reaction of and aldehydes, ketones, or imines to furnish insertion products -, namely, sterically more crowded benzophenone, acetophenone, 2,6-dichlorobenzaldehyde, and benzophenone imine couple with C6 or C6' of bipy in , respectively, whereas sterically less hindered benzaldehyde, cyclohexanone, and benzylideneaniline couple with C2 or C2' of bipy, respectively.
