The objective of this paper is to provide guidance for the design of the thick-walled cylinder made up of transversely isotropic material so that collapse of cylinder due to influence of internal and external pressure can be avoided. The concept of transition theory based on Lebesgue strain measure has been used to simplify the constitutive equations. Results have been analyzed theoretically and discussed numerically. From this analysis, it has been concluded that, under the influence of internal and external pressure, circular cylinder made up of transversely isotropic material (beryl) is on the safer side of the design as compared to the cylinders made up of isotropic material (steel). This is because of the reason that percentage increase in effective pressure required for initial yielding to become fully plastic is high for beryl as compared to steel which leads to the idea of "stress saving" that reduces the possibility of collapse of thick-walled cylinder due to internal and external pressure.

Bone is a highly heterogeneous and anisotropic material with a hierarchical structure. The effect of diaphysis locations and directions of loading on elastic-plastic compressive properties of bovine femoral cortical bone was examined in this study. The impact of location and loading directions on elastic-plastic compressive properties of cortical bone was found to be statistically insignificant in this study.

The varied material and the inherent complex microstructure make predicting the effective stiffness of fused deposition modeling (FDM) printed polylactic acid (PLA)/carbon fiber (CF) composite a troublesome problem. This article proposes a microstructure scanning electron microscope (SEM) mapping modeling and numerical mean procedure to calculate the effective stiffness of FDM printing PLA/CF laminates. The printed PLA/CF parts were modeled as a continuum of 3D uniform linear elasticity with orthotropic anisotropy, and their elastic behavior was characterized by orthotropic constitutive relations.

Accurate characterisation of seismic source mechanisms in mining environments is crucial for effective hazard mitigation, but it is complicated by the presence of anisotropic geological conditions. Neglecting anisotropic effects during moment tensor (MT) inversion introduces significant distortions in the retrieved source characteristics. In this study, we investigated the impact of ignoring anisotropy during MT inversion on the reliability of hazard assessment.

Bracket fungi sporocarps present promising environmentally friendly alternatives to harmful and wasteful structural applications with their high strength-to-weight ratio mechanical properties. Kingdom Fungi is estimated to have over three million species, yet only 4% of the species have been described by mycologists, and their mechanical behavior has been under-explored. This work aims to characterize the material behavior and mechanical properties of bracket fungi as a whole through micro-mechanical tensile testing combined with microstructural imaging and analysis of two representative species.

Quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) involves mapping microstructure in standardized units sensitive to histological properties and supplements conventional MRI, which relies on contrast weighted images where intensities have no biophysical meaning. While measuring tissue properties such as myelin, iron or water content is desired in a disease context, qMRI changes may typically reflect mixed influences from aging or pre-clinical degeneration. We used a fast multi-parameter mapping (MPM) protocol for clinical routine at 3T to reconstruct whole-brain quantitative maps of magnetization transfer saturation (MT), proton density (PD), longitudinal (R1), and transverse relaxation rate (R2*) with 1.
