The analysis of methanotroph community composition is relevant to studies of methane oxidation in a number of environments where methane is a significant carbon source. The development and application of a microarray targeting the particulate methane monooxygenase gene (pmoA) have allowed a high-throughput, semiquantitative analysis of the major methanotroph groups in a number of different environments. Here we describe the use of a pmoA-based short oligo array for the analysis of methanotroph populations in sediment samples. The method is suitable for analysis of any type of environmental sample from which DNA can be extracted.

Methane (CH) processes and fluxes have been widely investigated in low-latitude tropical wetlands and high-latitude boreal peatlands. In the mid-latitude Mongolia Plateau, however, CH processes and fluxes have been less studied, particularly in riverine wetlands. In this study, in situ experiments were conducted in the riverine sandy wetlands of the Mongolia Plateau to gain a better understanding of CH emissions and their influencing mechanisms.

The urgency to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions has driven interest in sustainable biogas utilization. This study investigates a 1 L enclosed membrane photobioreactor (MPBR) using a microalgae-methanotroph coculture for biogas capture. Operating with a hydraulic and solid retention time of 7 days and a biogas loading rate of 2.

Coastal wetland ecosystems play a key role in the global carbon cycle and climate mitigation. The land conversion of coastal wetlands to paddy fields, an increasingly common practice to feed the growing population, has been shown to dramatically stimulate the methane emissions of (CH). However, the knowledge about how such wetland conversion affects the methane oxidation, a key process regulating methane emissions from coastal wetlands, is nearly unknown.

Methanotroph could facilitate nitrogen removal during methane oxidation, and promote conversion of organic compounds by producing methane monooxygenase. Co-metabolic effect and mechanism of aerobic methane oxidation on the removal of nitrogen and organic matter from Baijiu wastewater were investigated using an improved denitrifying biological filter. It was found that the average removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN) and chroma increased by 17 %, 22 % and 10 % in reactor B with methane compared to reactor A with air only.

Microbial methane oxidation plays a significant role in regulating methane emissions from lakes and reservoirs. However, the differences in methane oxidation activity and methanotrophic community between lakes and reservoirs remain inadequately characterized. In this study, sediment and water samples were collected from the large shallow lake (Dianchi) and deep reservoirs (Dongfeng and Hongjiadu) located in karst area, Southwest China.
