A two-color absorption spectroscopy strategy has been developed for measuring the column density and density-weighted path-average temperature of the absorbing species in nonuniform gases. This strategy uses two transitions with strengths that scale nearly linearly with temperature. In addition, measured lineshapes are used to accurately model absorbance spectra. As a result, the column density and density-weighted path-average temperature of the absorbing species can be inferred from a comparison of signals measured across a nonuniform line of sight (LOS) with simulated signals calculated using a uniform LOS. This strategy is demonstrated with simulations of water-vapor absorption across a nonuniform LOS with temperature and composition gradients comparable to those in hydrogen-air diffusion flames. In this demonstration, both the column density and density-weighted path-average temperature of water vapor are recovered to within 0.5%.

In this study, kapok fiber (KF) a hollow and hydrophobic fiber, was modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), rendering adsorbed amount of ∼0.75 × 10 mol/g. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements of dry KF/CTAB and KF/CPC evidenced a periodic distance of ∼2.

Protein adsorption to poly(ethylenimine)-modified Sepharose FF: IX. Further studies on counterion effects and behavior in therapeutic protein separation.

J Chromatogr A

December 2024

Department of Biochemical Engineering, School of Chemical Engineering and Technology and Key Laboratory of Systems Bioengineering and Frontiers Science Center for Synthetic Biology (Ministry of Education), Tianjin University, Tianjin 300350, PR China. Electronic address:

Our previous studies on protein adsorption onto anion-exchangers of poly(ethylenimine) (PEI)-grafted Sepharose FF (PEI-Sepharose) proved their significantly improved performance over the commercial nongrafting anion-exchangers such as Q Sepharose FF, and it was found the protein adsorption behavior on PEI-Sepharose was more sensitive to counterions (Cl, SCN, HPO and SO). However, the complicated role of counterions has not been well interpreted due to their distinct chemical and physical characteristics. Thus, we have further studied the counterion effects by adding two halide ions (F and Br) to explore the effects of the three halide ions on bovine serum albumin adsorption and the results were compared with previous data.

The offshore oilfields in the North Sea area are increasingly employed for projects beyond oil production, like carbon capture and storage (CCS). Still, the fossil fuel production from mature fields is significant. It has raised environmental concerns associated with discharging produced waters (PW) and drilling mud into the sea.

Vertical distribution characteristics of microplastics and bacterial communities in the sediment columns of Jianhu lake in China.

Environ Geochem Health

December 2024

Yunnan Key Laboratory of Plateau Wetland Conservation, Restoration and Ecological Services, Southwest Forestry University, Kunming, 650224, China.

Microorganisms change the properties of microplastics, at the same time, microplastics can also affect the distribution of microorganisms. To investigate this issue, we chose to study Jianhu Lake, a plateau lake in southwestern China, by collecting data at three sampling locations. The microplastics and bacterial communities in the sediment columns of Jianhu Lake were sampled within a 0 to 60 cm profile, and the basic characteristics of microplastic abundance, shape, color, size, and polymer type were determined accordingly, via their collection, separation, extraction, and identification.

Evaluation of effectiveness of bacteriophage purification methods.

Virol J

December 2024

Department of Rural Clinical Sciences, La Trobe Rural Health School, La Trobe University, Bendigo, VIC, 3550, Australia.

The use of bacteriophages for therapy has increased over the last decade. While there is need for clear regulatory pathways for bacteriophage approval for mainstream use in clinical practice, practitioners and patients have been able to access bacteriophage therapy under compassionate grounds and through magistral preparations. However, there is currently no standard for purifying these bacteriophages to ensure safety, and good manufacturing practice certification may not be achieved in these emergency uses.
