(1E,4E)-1,5-Bis(2,6-difluorophenyl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one, C17H10F4O, (I), dimerizes under sunlight in chloroform solution to form the corresponding cyclobutane derivative, (2E,2'E)-1,1'-[2,4-bis(2,6-difluorophenyl)cyclobutane-1,3-diyl]bis[3-(2,6-difluorophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one], C34H20F8O2, (II). The crystal structure of (I) explains why no topochemical dimerization can occur in the solid state. In the solid, molecules of dimer (II) show the `truxillic acid'-type arrangement of crystallographic centres of inversion, with half a molecule per asymmetric unit and cell dimensions closely related to those of the monomer. Intermolecular interactions in both solids are dominated by C-H···O and C-H···F contacts and also comprise interactions with aromatic systems (C-H···π and π-π).

The Effectiveness of Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) Extraction Methods in Gram-Negative U.

Polymers (Basel)

Bioplastics are emerging as a promising solution to reduce pollution caused by petroleum-based plastics. Among them, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) stand out as viable biotechnological alternatives, though their commercialization is limited by expensive downstream processes. Traditional PHA extraction methods often involve toxic solvents and high energy consumption, underscoring the need for more sustainable approaches.

Plastics are widely produced due to their stability and ease of manufacturing, but many of them quickly become a waste, breaking down into microplastics and nanoplastics. While methods for the identification and characterization of plastic particles are well consolidated, the small size of nanoplastics presents challenges for their detection and analysis. Furthermore, due to the difficulty of identifying nanoplastics, analytical studies concerning their effect on cells and a comprehensive spectroscopic characterization are still lacking.

Influence of Different Solvents on the Mechanical Properties of Electrospun Scaffolds.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Biomechanical Engineering, Faculty of Mechanics, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Plytinės Str. 25, 10105 Vilnius, Lithuania.

This article investigates the influence of different solvents on the mechanical properties of biocompatible and biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds. During the research, using electrospinning technology, 27 samples of polycaprolactone nanofibers exposed to different solvents were produced. A tensile test was performed on the produced nanofiber samples, and the nanofiber mechanical properties, yield strength, elastic modulus, and elastic elongation were calculated, and load-displacement and stress-strain dependence diagrams were compared from the obtained results.

Anti-proliferative and photodynamic activities of Senna didymobotrya (Fresen.) leaf alkaloid-rich extracts against breast cancer cells.

BMC Complement Med Ther

January 2025

Laser Research Centre, Faculty of Health Sciences, Doornfontein Campus, University of Johannesburg, Johannesburg, 2028, South Africa.

Background: Amongst all neoplastic diseases, breast cancer represents a major cause of death among the female population in developed and developing countries. Since alkaloid drugs are commonly used in chemotherapy to manage this disease, this study investigated the anti-proliferative effectiveness of alkaloid-rich fractions of Senna didymobotrya leaves only and with laser irradiation against MCF-7 breast cancer cells.

Method And Materials: A powdered sample of the plant leaves was extracted with 50% ethanol, filtered and their pH was adjusted with acid and base solution followed by partitioning with chloroform and ethyl acetate solvents.

Aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) reduces luminescence and compromises brightness in solid-state displays, necessitating strategies to mitigate its effects for enhanced performance. This study presents cost-effective method to mitigate ACQ of pyrene by co-assembling polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons within low molecular weight gelator. Synthesized from readily available materials-cholesteryl chloroformate and pentaerythritol-in one-step reaction, gelator incorporates four cholesteryl units, reported to promote robust supramolecular gels in various solvents.
