Agar has been modified by microwave assisted grafting with acrylamide monomer, resulting in poly acrylamide grafted agar (Ag-g-PAM). The synthesized grades of Ag-g-PAM were characterized by standard physico-chemical characterization techniques (FTIR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM)) to ascertain the intended grafting. The synthesized graft copolymer (Ag-g-PAM) has been investigated (in vitro) for controlled and colon targeted release of 5-amino salicylic acid (5-ASA).

The infestation of tissue after implantation is a major problem as a bacterial biofilm can form on the surface of the implants, leading to implant-associated infections (IAIs). One approach to prevent such IAI is to apply antibacterial coatings consisting of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) and bacteriophages (PHAGs). PEM were constructed by alternately adsorbing oppositely charged polyelectrolytes on a substrate according to the layer-by-layer concept.

Although combining 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and Interferon-beta (IFNb) improves response rates in Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), the outcomes remain suboptimal. This study investigates the feasibility of using highly transfected Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) to deliver a chemotherapeutic (5-FU) and an immunomodulator (IFNb) for localized HCC treatment. Considering the crucial role of cold-chain transportation in off-the-shelf allogeneic therapy, the study also assesses the quality and efficacy of frozen-thawed engineered MSCs, simulating a multisite study process.

In this study, we have developed agar, a seaweed derived polysaccharide based green adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions (Pb, Cu, Cr and Cd) from multimetal solution. Porous cryogels of agar grafted with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) were prepared by freeze-drying. The adsorption capacity and selectivity of the optimized APTES-agar cryogel for heavy metal ions (Cu, Cr, Pb, Cd) were investigated in multimetal solutions.

Local delivery of antibiotics as prophylaxis for prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) is frequently used during total hip replacement surgery. Morselized bone allograft impregnated with vancomycin and tobramycin () could provide effective prophylaxis against bacteria commonly associated with PJIs. In this study, the concentrations of antibiotics released by bone allograft impregnated with were determined by using an bioassay system entailing measuring inhibition zone diameters caused by antibiotic-impregnated bone chips cast in agar against standard curves.
