Purpose: To compare the results of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) combined with mitomycin C (MMC) to the results of free conjunctival autograft (CA) combined with MMC for the treatment of patients with recurrent pterygium.
Methods: In this prospective study, 60 eyes of 55 patients with recurrent pterygium were included and randomly assigned into group I (n = 30) who underwent AMT combined with MMC (AMT-MMC) and group II (n = 30) who underwent CA combined with MMC (CA-MMC). During a mean follow-up of 27.2 ± 20.8 months, recurrence of pterygium, change in uncorrected visual acuity and complications (including pain, corneal, conjunctival or scleral changes) were analyzed and were compared between groups.
Results: Five eyes of 5 patients were lost to follow-up and were removed from analysis. The mean age (p = 0.274), the mean follow-up (p = 0.063), the number of prior pterygium excision surgeries (p = 0.641) and the mean preoperative visual acuity (p = 0.959) were similar in both groups. Recurrence was seen in 2 eyes (8%) in AMT-MMC group and 4 patients (13.3%) in CA-MMC group (p = 0.531). Postoperative visual acuity (p = 0.237), change in visual acuity (p = 0.525), severe pain (p = 0.531) and epithelial defect lasting more than 5 days (p = 0.510) were similar in both groups.
Conclusions: Amniotic membrane combined with MMC has similar recurrence rate to CA combined with MMC, in patients with recurrent pterygium. Similar outcomes and complication rates make AMT-MMC a promising method for the treatment of recurrent pterygium cases.

Despite the promising potential of cell-based therapies developed using tissue engineering techniques to treat a wide range of diseases, including limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD), which leads to corneal blindness, their commercialization remains constrained. This is primarily attributable to the limited cell sources, the use of non-standardizable, unscalable, and unsustainable techniques, and the extended manufacturing processes required to produce transplantable tissue-like surrogates. Herein, we present the first demonstration of the potential of a novel approach combining collagen films (CF), hyaluronic acid (HA), human telomerase-immortalized limbal epithelial stem cells (T-LESCs), and macromolecular crowding (MMC) to develop innovative biomimetic substrates for limbal epithelial stem cells (LESCs).

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) comprises about 75% of all bladder cancers. Although NMIBC is treatable, it poses significant costs and burdens to patients due to high recurrence rates. We conducted an updated meta-analysis of studies that evaluated the efficacy of and outcomes after treatment with mitomycin C (MMC), gemcitabine (GEM), and docetaxel (DOCE) for NMIBC recurrence and progression.

The antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of plant essential oils (EOs) have aroused significant interest for their potential as effective alternatives or supplements in combating microbial infections and biofilm-associated challenges. For these applications, EOs must be encapsulated to overcome some key technical limitations, including high volatility, poor stability, and low solubility. This study aimed to develop microencapsulated EOs derived from two valuable Moroccan medicinal plants, Lavandula stoechas L.

Prenatal repair of myelomeningocele (MMC) is associated with lower rates of hydrocephalus requiring ventriculoperitoneal shunt and improved motor function when compared with postnatal repair. Efforts aiming to develop less invasive surgical techniques to decrease the risk for the pregnant patient while achieving similar benefits for the fetus have led to the implementation of fetoscopic surgical techniques. While no ideal anesthetic technique for fetoscopic MMC repair has been demonstrated, we present our anesthetic approach for these repairs, including considerations for both the pregnant patient and the fetus.

The discharge of untreated dye waste from various industrial sectors into wastewater poses significant environmental and health risks. This study presents an innovative approach by developing a cost-effective and eco-friendly hybrid mesoporous nanocomposite, silver nanoparticles@mesoporous mango peel-derived carbon (AgNPs@MMC), synthesized from agricultural waste (mango peels) and urban waste (X-ray film waste). The core objectives of this work are: (i) recycling agricultural and urban waste to produce valuable materials; (ii) achieving effective removal of methyl violet 10B (MV10B) through simultaneous adsorption and photocatalytic degradation; and (iii) evaluating the antimicrobial properties of the developed material.
