Robust diamond meshes with unique wettability properties.

Published: March 2014

Robust diamond meshes with excellent superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties have been fabricated. Superhydrophobicity is observed for water with varying pH from 1 to 14 with good recyclability. Reversible superhydrophobicity and hydrophilicity can be easily controlled. The diamond meshes show highly efficient water-oil separation and water pH droplet transference.

Periodic Local Coupled-Cluster Theory for Insulators and Metals.

We describe the implementation details of periodic local coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations (CCSD) and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)] using local natural orbitals (LNOs) and -point symmetry. We discuss and compare several choices for orbital localization, fragmentation, and LNO construction. By studying diamond and lithium, we demonstrate that periodic LNO-CC theory can be applied with equal success to both insulators and metals, achieving speedups of 2 to 3 orders of magnitude even for moderately sized -point meshes.

Coatings for Permanent Meshes Used to Enhance Healing in Abdominal Hernia Repair: A Scoping Review.

Center for Perioperative Optimization, Department of Surgery, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Herlev, Denmark.

Introduction: Hernia meshes are used to reduce recurrence and pain rates, but the rates are still high. This could be improved with coatings of the mesh. This scoping review aimed to provide an overview of mesh coatings used to promote healing in abdominal hernia repair and to report beneficial and unbeneficial effects.

We implement the phaseless auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo method using the plane-wave based projector augmented wave method and explore the accuracy and the feasibility of applying our implementation to solids. We use a singular value decomposition to compress the two-body Hamiltonian and, thus, reduce the computational cost. Consistent correlation energies from the primitive-cell sampling and the corresponding supercell calculations numerically verify our implementation.

We demonstrate a novel mesh of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) for programmable optical processors. We thoroughly analyze the benefits and drawbacks of previously known meshes and compare our newly proposed mesh with these prior architectures, highlighting its unique features and advantages. The proposed mesh, referred to as Bokun mesh, is an architecture that merges the attributes of the prior topologies Diamond and Clements.

The impact of modeling choices on the assessment of Ni-Ti fatigue properties through surrogate specimens.

The implant of self-expandable Ni-Ti stents for the treatment of peripheral diseases has become an established medical practice. However, the reported failure in clinics highlights the open issue of the fatigue characterization of these devices. One of the most common approaches for calculating the Ni-Ti fatigue limit (commonly defined in terms of mean and alternate strain for a fixed number of cycles) consists of using surrogate specimens which replicate the strain distributions of the final device but in simplified geometries.
