We developed a decimetric size model based on coupling generalized Darcy's law and heat-transfer equations to model viscous dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) pumping through highly permeable porous media under non-isothermal conditions. The presence of fingering and non-wetting phase ganglia was modeled through an unsteady capillary diffusion coefficient and an arbitrary heterogeneous permeability field. The model was validated using existing experimental data of a simple case, an oil injection in a 2D tank packed with glass beads.

Small-scale habitat structure modulates the effects of no-take marine reserves for coral reef macroinvertebrates.

Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, UR 227 CoReUs 2, Fisheries Department of Vanuatu, Port-Vila, Vanuatu.

No-take marine reserves are one of the oldest and most versatile tools used across the Pacific for the conservation of reef resources, in particular for invertebrates traditionally targeted by local fishers. Assessing their actual efficiency is still a challenge in complex ecosystems such as coral reefs, where reserve effects are likely to be obscured by high levels of environmental variability. The goal of this study was to investigate the potential interference of small-scale habitat structure on the efficiency of reserves.

The trial included 90 patients with seronegative spondylarthritis (SA): 60 ones with ankylosing spondylarthritis (30 with central and 30 with peripheral forms) and 30 patients with reactive arthritis (RA). RA patients with affection of the peripheral joints, periarticular tissues and the spine are effectively treated with a complex of water radon baths and low frequency ultrasound but in affection of the peripheral joints and tendon-ligament system water radon baths and ultraphonophoresis of hydrocortisone are recommended. Water radon baths and decimetric therapy are good for patients with central ankylosing spondylarthritis having a dominant lesion of the spine.

The experiment on 71 non-inbred white pregnant rats, 316 fetuses and placentas, 323 first progeny in experimental chronic impairment of uteroplacental circulation in females with pregnancy in the ploid period has found that decimetric waves (DW) in a weak heat dose (40 mW/cm2) prevents hypotrophy and disorders of fetal and placental development. Also, DW accelerate formation of motorsensory reflexes in the progeny in an early neonatal period and normalize their behavioral reactions at a mature age. The findings may serve experimental-theoretical grounds for application of weak heat DW radiation in obstetric practice in various general and regional hemocirculation.

The article concerns biological effects of non-ionized electromagnetic irradiation which is considered in modern world as a serious ecological factor. Influence of decimetric microwave irradiation (460 MHz) on free radical processes in the rat brain tissues--visual cortex and hypothalamus--were investigated. Oxidative effects of both lipid peroxidation and specific activity of glutathione reductase were determined.
