European central hypoventilation syndrome consortium description of congenital central hypoventilation syndrome neonatal onset.

Eur J Pediatr

January 2025

Service de Physiologie Pédiatrique-Centre du Sommeil-CRMR Hypoventilations Alvéolaires Rares, INSERM NeuroDiderot, Université Paris-Cité, AP-HP, Hôpital Robert Debré, Paris, France.

Unlabelled: It is known that in most cases of congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS), apnoeas and hypoventilation occur at birth. Nevertheless, a detailed description of initial symptoms, including pregnancy events and diagnostic tests performed, is warranted in infants with neonatal onset of CCHS, that is, in the first month of life. The European Central Hypoventilation Syndrome Consortium created an online patient registry from which 97 infants (44 females) with CCHS of neonatal onset and PHOX2B mutation from 10 countries were selected.

Transfusion in trauma: empiric or guided therapy?

Res Pract Thromb Haemost

January 2025

Oxford Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre, Department of Haematology, Oxford University Hospitals National Health Service Foundation Trust, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, UK.

A state of the art lecture titled "Transfusion therapy in trauma-what to give? Empiric vs guided" was presented at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Congress in 2024. Uncontrolled bleeding is the commonest preventable cause of death after traumatic injury. Hemostatic resuscitation is the foundation of contemporary transfusion practice for traumatic bleeding and has 2 main aims: to immediately support the circulating blood volume and to treat/prevent the associated trauma-induced coagulopathy.

Background: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a significant global health challenge with high incidence and low survival rates; this study aimed to predict mortality in these patients.

Methods: This 5-year retrospective chart review, conducted at the emergency departments (EDs) of two tertiary hospitals, systematically categorized, coded, and analyzed variables to assess mortality risk in OHCA patients.

Improving lung protective mechanical ventilation: the individualised intraoperative open-lung approach.

Br J Anaesth

February 2025

CIBER de Enfermedades Respiratorias, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Madrid, Spain; Intensive Care Unit, Hospital Universitario La Princesa, Madrid, Spain.

Despite the maturity and sophistication of anaesthesia workstations, improvements in our understanding of intraoperative mechanical ventilation, and use of less invasive surgical techniques, postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are still a common problem in surgical patients of all ages. PPCs are associated with a higher incidence of perioperative morbidity and mortality, longer hospital stays, and higher healthcare costs. PPCs are strongly associated with anaesthesia-induced atelectasis, which predisposes to lung damage when partially collapsed lungs are subjected to mechanical ventilation.
