Metabolic pathways of eicosanoids-derivatives of arachidonic acid and their significance in skin.

Cell Mol Biol Lett

January 2025

Department of Analytical Chemistry, Medical University of Bialystok, Kilinskiego 1, 15-069, Bialystok, Poland.

The skin is a barrier that protects the human body against environmental factors (physical, including solar radiation, chemicals, and pathogens). The integrity and, consequently, the effective metabolic activity of skin cells is ensured by the cell membrane, the important structural and metabolic elements of which are phospholipids. Phospholipids are subject to continuous transformation, including enzymatic hydrolysis (with the participation of phospholipases A, C, and D) to free polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which under the influence of cyclooxygenases (COX1/2), lipoxygenases (LOXs), and cytochrome P450 (CYPs P450) are metabolized to various classes of oxylipins, depending on the type of PUFA being metabolized and the enzyme acting.

Inno4Vac, a public-private partnership funded by the IMI2/EU/EFPIA Joint Undertaking (IMI2 JU), brings together academic institutions, SMEs, and pharmaceutical companies to accelerate and de-risk vaccine development. The project has made significant strides in the selection and production of challenge agents for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and toxigenic Clostridioides difficile for controlled human infection model studies (CHIMs). A regulatory workshop held on March 20, 2024, addressed the standardisation of clinical procedures, ethical considerations, endpoints, and data integrity, highlighting the ongoing initiatives related to these CHIMs.

A novel and high-performance tumor inhibitor of La, N co-doped carbon dots for U251 and LN229 cells.

Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces

January 2025

Department of Neurosurgery, The Affiliated Ganzhou Hospital, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Ganzhou 341000, China. Electronic address:

To address the medical challenges posed by glioblastoma, a novel and high-performance tumor inhibitor (La@FA-CDs) composed of folic acid and lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate, was successfully synthesized and demonstrated effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of U251 and LN299 cells. The microstructure of La@FA-CDs was extensively analyzed by FTIR, UV-Vis, XPS, TEM, AFM NMR, and nanoparticle size analyzer. The optical and electrical properties of La@FA-CDs were characterized using a fluorescence spectrometer and a zeta potential analyzer.

Background: The inclusion of artificial intelligence in medical education, specifically through the use of ChatGPT (OpenAI, San Francisco, CA), has transformed learning and generated many ethical questions. This study aims to analyze the medical students' ethical concerns about using ChatGPT in medical education, focusing on privacy, accuracy, and professional integrity.

Methods: The study format was a cross-sectional survey distributed to 219 medical students at ABWA Medical College, Pakistan.

Pytaxon: A Python software for resolving and correcting taxonomic names in biodiversity data.

Biodivers Data J

January 2025

Laboratório de Computação Avançada para Biodiversidade (COMBIO). Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, Belém, Brazil Laboratório de Computação Avançada para Biodiversidade (COMBIO). Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi Belém Brazil.

Background: The standardisation and correction of taxonomic names in large biodiversity databases remain persistent challenges for researchers, as errors in species names can compromise ecological analyses, land-use planning and conservation efforts, particularly when inaccurate data are shared on global biodiversity portals.

New Information: We present pytaxon, a Python software designed to resolve and correct taxonomic names in biodiversity data by leveraging the Global Names Verifier (GNV) API and employing fuzzy matching techniques to suggest corrections for discrepancies and nomenclatural inconsistencies. The pytaxon offers both a Command Line Interface (CLI) and a Graphical User Interface (GUI), ensuring accessibility to users with different levels of computing expertise.
