Single magnetic Co atoms are deposited on atomically thin NaCl films on Au(111). Two different adsorption sites are revealed by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), i.e., at Na and at Cl locations. Using density functional based simulations of the STM images, we show that the Co atoms substitute with either a Na or Cl atom of the NaCl surface, resulting in cationic and anionic Co dopants with a high thermal stability. The dependence of the magnetic coupling between neighboring Co atoms on their separation is investigated via spatially resolved measurement of the local density of states.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) has attracted enormous attention as a visible-light-responsive carbon-based semiconductor photocatalyst. However, fast charge recombination seriously limits its application. Therefore, it is urgent to modify the electronic structure of g-CN to obtain excellent photocatalytic activity.

Semimetallic two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials beyond graphene, especially 2D materials with robust Dirac points against the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), are still highly sought. Herein, we theoretically demonstrate the InBi monolayer as a long-sought 2D Dirac material whose exotic Dirac Fermionic states cannot be gapped out by SOC. The InBi monolayer with the litharge crystal structure possesses not only 4-fold band degeneracy, linear energy dispersion, and ultrahigh Fermi velocity in the order of 10 m/s, but also spontaneous ferroelasticity that can lead to the orthorhombic lattice deformation and semimetallic electronic structure.

Rational design of layered double hydroxide (LDH) electrodes is of great significance for high-performance supercapacitors (SCs). Herein, ultrathin cobalt-nickel-magnesium layered double hydroxide (CoNiMg-LDH) nanosheets with plentiful oxygen vacancies are synthesized via sacrificial magnesium-based replacement reaction at room temperature. Self-doping and mild reduction of magnesium can significantly increase the concentration of oxygen vacancies in CoNiMg-LDH, which promotes the electrochemical charge transfer efficiency and enhances the adsorption ability of electrolytes.

Spinel-type structured materials have attracted considerable attention and been regarded as promising alternative catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the regulation of catalytically active octahedral sites in spinel structure to realize high activity and good stability for OER electrocatalysis is still a great challenge. Herein, we propose a self-doping strategy to boost OER performance of spinel-type NiS enriched high valence Ni as active sites.

Two-dimensional (2D) homologous perovskites are arousing intense interest in photovoltaics and light-emitting fields, attributing to significantly improved stability and increasing optoelectronic performance. However, investigations on 2D homologous perovskites with ultrathin thickness and large lateral dimension have been seldom reported, being mainly hindered by challenges in synthesis.
